...but I know every shotgunned bird is not killed cleanly. What's the best way to finish the bird off, so it doesn't suffer?

The old-fashioned way is to wring its neck. Hold the head and twirl the body, and in a few twirls you'll feel the neck crack. Easier, in my opinion, is to hold the bird with your stronger hand under its chest, your forefinger at the base of its throat. Press tightly, especially with your forefinger, and you'll stop the heart in a few seconds.

Breaking it's neck is the cleanest and most humane way of dispatching a wounded bird. You don't need to "twirl" it. Simply use you hunting boot heel edge with downward pressure to snap it's neck cleanly.
By the way for the record, this isn't a "dumb" question at all, there is no such thing..Only "dumb" answers..........lol

this might sound a little mean but to save the meat so that you dont tear it up you should step on the head.

BEAT it to death with a rock. Then kick it. Then stab it. Then run over it. J/K I wouldn't know. I buy my birds already dead and packaged in plastic at the store :)

Shoot it again at a closer range so you can be sure to get it in the head. It will die instantly.
