Began in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the 1930's we had the depression, 200.000 thousand school boys left home and wandered the streets in search of jobs and food. A bad time, I remember men coming to the house, begging for something to eat, Mother always gave them something. She tried to put extra potatoes in the pot so we would have something to give them. Then Roosevelt started the WPA, which gave jobs to millions, they built our high school. If you look on the corner stone of building, you will still see the letters WPA. This was a very bad time, they sold lard in place of butter in the grocery stores and it contained a orange pill that you squeezed so make the lard look yellow like butter.
