I am talking best as in which you would want to take into a war.

It seems so far that M-16s aren't getting much love in this debate (at least the people I have talked to).

The M-16 doesnt shoot a 5.22 it shoots a 5.56 NATO or the civilian name for it is a . 223 and the AK 47 doesnt shoot a 30 06 it shoots a 7.62 NATO round or the civilian name is a .308

The answer to your question can get many answers, Do you mean the best as is best made? For what use (close combat or open area fighting)? It makes abig difference.

I would say the MP-5 is great for Close Quarter combat as it is a very well made weapon and with its compact size it makes using it inside building perfect wher bigger (longer) assualt weapons are harder to move to a firing position with walls and other obstruction. They are however very expensive so that is a drawback.

The AK-47 is a good weapon with good knockdown power. They are very basic rifles so they can be made very cheap and if you don't have a lot of money to arm your troops its a great option. They are ok as for being dependable.

The M-16/M-4 are not bad weapons at all. Alot of their bad publicity comes from the fact that they were pushed into service too soon in vietnam. Just like 30 milion dollar combat aircraft all have a period where they are full of problems and lots of crashes during their development and initial time of being brought into service anytime a new rifle is made (I mean new design not just a version of something already in use) there are going to be problems. The M-16 got pushed into service before proper testing could be done and it was put into service in some of the worst conditions both of those factors weighed in on their failure during that time.

Since then they have corrected most problems.

The M-16 is a much more acurate weapon thatn the AK 47 but the AK 47 has more knockdown power (I know this from actual 1st hand knowledge as I took 4 rounds from a AK in Iraq. Never been shot with a 5.56 but I can say with almost certian confidence I would choose getting hit qith a 5.56)

That being said I would choose the M-16/M-4 over the AK 47 given the choice. The rate of fire is better accuracy is better and you also have more control over the rate of fire which gives you fire discipline and ammo conservation.

I was a Marine in Viet Nam. I will tell you when they took the M-14 away from us and gave us those Mattel M-16's, it was a very sad day for us. We loved the M-14. It was much heavier than the M-16, to be sure, but it was as reliable and dependable weapon as was ever made. It would take a man down with ONE shot, in his tracks!

I know an M-14 is not considered an assault rifle, so I will now answer your question:

1st - AK-47, A tank driver in Russia invented it and now it is the most widely used weapon in the world. Very reliable, easy to use, and easy to manufacture.

2nd - M-16, I choose this one because it is the only other one I have ever used. Good weapon if taken care of, cleaned often, and serviced.

Ask H&K. They're a British owned company (part of Royal Ordnance Co), and they have the dubious distinction of making probably the worlds best production assault rifle - the G36 - and unquestionably the worst, the SA80.

The British MOD have been sticking to the Godawfull SA80 in it's various modifications rather than buy a proven but 'foreign' weapon like the AR-18, but now that RO have bought H&K, they can switch to the G36 and still say they're buying British :-)

I don't know there's a clear cut #1 best AR, but IMO, the g36 Heckler & Koch g36 rifle is the best.

From Wiki:
The G36 (company designation, Bundeswehr designation Gewehr G36) is an assault rifle designed in the early 1990s and manufactured in Germany by Heckler & Koch. It is the current service rifle of the German Armed Forces and the Spanish Armed Forces among others. A family of variants exists, many of which have been adopted by police or military forces.

I'm no expert, but I've heard some expert stories. The AK-47 is very cheap and reliable in dirty environs. But it is not accurate at a sizable range. This may be more a function of its poor sights, than anything else.

The M-16 requires much more maintenance & is not quite as reliable. But it is much much more accurate at longer ranges. Its rate of fire is higher than the AK (I think).

The H&K MP-5 is the usual choice for close quarters, SWAT and special forces use. I'm not sure it qualifies as a true assault rifle though.

The AK-47, next the M-14.
Both weapons are in high dmand from the troops in the middle east. the 5.22mm (M-16) is just a big 22 cal.
Nothing like a good ole' 30-06 to do the job.

The Baby M-16 is the best assault rifle because it is light, effective and powerful.

There's a special on the military channel that my hubby and I just watched tonight about the top ten combat rifles ranked using 'scientific analyses and expert opinion' and their number one was the AK-47. He said he would much rather have that than the M16.

Russia - with the AK-47 (or the AK-103 as it is known today)

United States - with the iconic M16 (or M4A1)

Belgium - with the FN-FAL (right arm of the free world)

I would personally want a Steyr Aug. I've fired one and it is GREAT! plus you can change the barrel from assault rifle to Light Machine Gun. Very versatile rifle.
