If his father gave it to him for his birthday? A legal firearm.

I know an 18 year old can take it to the range by himself to do target practice so would it be legal if a father gave the gun to his son?

Is it legal or not?

NO..........Federal law mandates you must be 21 years of age to LEGALLY purchase a handgun, 18 years old for rifles or shotguns. The fact that it's a gift from Father to Son changes nothing and doesn't circumvent the law.....

No you cannot. Some states allow legal ownership of a handgun for 18 yr olds (but you still can't purchase one from a federally licensed dealer --- those are always 21 no matter where you live), but Cali is not one of them. You must be 21 to own a handgun in California.

Yes. From 18-21 you can't buy one on your own from a licensed dealer but you can receive one from a private party. Under 18 you may own one but essentially you must have parental permission to do anything with it.

(B14) May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)? [Back]

Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles generally may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e.g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting.

Yes. An 18-year old is an adult anywhere in the U.S.A. The only exception is alcohol.
