Um, I wanted an answer here, so I am not gonna look it up. If you are an atheist, you should be able to explain this.

What the heck are you people talking about. I wasn't trying to start a fight. I just want to know what you base your system of morality on, if you have one. Nothing more, nothing less. I was comparing you to religious people, yes, but only as a comparison, not as an insult. Are all atheist this touchy?

and I am not going to "quote scripture". I just want a direct answer. Do you have one, what do you base it on. That is all.

You guys are the most presumptuous people in the world. I never said that religion was the only source of morality. I just made a contrast in my main question with what religious people think. Calm down and just answer the question directly. Do you have one and what do you base it on.
So far I have only heard "common sense" as an answer. Is that the correct generally accepted answer? Or is it something else?

OK, I give up. You people are lunatics.
1) I never even said if I was religious or not, not once did I mention my personal beliefs
2) I never said religion is the only moral compass
3) I only asked a simple question and got attacked without provocation.
4) I think that no matter what you believe in, you should be able to explain it clearly without such venom
5) I feel like you just blew a chance to give someone who didn't know about atheism (me) all I needed to know in order to make the decision that you are all certifiably presumptuous, accusative, and near crazy.

I really don't think any of you are reading anything that has been said here. You are crazy. Anything that is said here is falling on deaf ears so I am not going to try anymore. It is like an alien coming to Earth and trying to have a conversation with a tree.

Atheists believe in morality. Apparently Christians do not, as they keep insisting that if there's no God, there's no reason to do right instead of wrong.

No, I don't think we have any morals. You see we believe in mankind, and care about everyone, we don't care what religious dogma you follow, we simply care for the species. We do unto others for the same reason. You do things because it pleases a sky god, we do things to help others with no reward necessary from a sky god or any other deities. We don't do things for rewards we do things for the betterment of society as a whole. We don't have slaves, we don't treat women badly, as in second class citizens, we hold everyone for their own responsibilities to themselves and others. We do not need some long ago entity to absorb our sins, we don't believe there are such things, but if we did we wouldn't hand our discretion's over to someone else - rather we would take responsibility for ourselves and others as a whole.
So we are an immoral bunch. We simply request that we all should be responsible for our actions and deeds and respect everyone and everything including this planet that we are all sharing.

Why do you people insist on being ignorantly insulting? God did not create morals. I have known many christians that wouldn't know moral if it slapped them upside the head. The most moral people I have ever known are Atheists. Atheists are responsible for their own code of conduct. We don't rely on someone else to monitor our thoughts and actions. We are intelligent enough to handle it ourselves.

I don't think that you have to believe in God to have morals. I believe that if a person is raised right, they can have any religion (or none) as long as their parents instilled in them the difference between right and wrong.
I once saw a great comment that someone posted on here. It said,"Is it more righteous for someone to do good deeds because of fear of punishment, or for someone to do good deeds when they don't believe they will be punished regardless?" (Those weren't the exact words, btw.)

Morality isn't something believed in... it is a learned behavior. And, with this in mind, of course atheists adhere to moral standards just as everyone else. The difference, morally, between atheists and theists is that only the atheist takes full responsibility for his moral diversions and only the atheist evaluates personally and carefully which morals he ought to cling to.... and I will hazard a guess that honesty is perhaps the highest of all his values.

Most atheists are every bit as moral as nonatheists. Thank you for trying.
My morals are based upon life discoveries and internal meditation. They are a conscious choice. They are without any input from Jesus Christ or any other god whatsoever. Is that so difficult to grasp?

most intelligent people see the worth of morality but just being an atheist is not a criteria for morality . also the more intelligent people get the more likelyhood of them being atheists.

You imply that man incapable of morality without the presence of "God"? You don't have much faith in your own kind.
I agree with Snark. Morality is evolutionary.
