I want to start hunting and I've decided that my first gun will be a shotgun rather than a rifle.

I would like to be able to use it for both deer and birds. I think a 12gauge will suit my needs, but as far as brands and models, I'd like to hear some suggestions. I'm looking to keep the total cost (new or used) under $500

Definately go for the Remington 870. You should be able to buy a new express model with 2 barrels and be within your budget.

Like the above poster said, with proper care, this gun will outlast you.

Remington 870 Express and Mossberg 500. Either one of these will outlast you if you take decent care of them.

Yo can go wrong with the Remingtom 870 pump shotgun. If you catch them on sale, you can get it for under $200 in my area.
