I had this discussion with a few people while I was studying at NYU. If America used religion to force people into a perfect community. What do you think?

No one forced our leaders of early america to go to church. In fact although george washington claimed to be christian he didnt attend church.
Without boundaries and everyone having unlimited freedom to do whatever they want, chaos would ensue. We see society leaving biblical principles and it is destroying the family unit.
This is destroying our society.
Did you knowmost the inmates in prison come from single parent homes where there is lack of moral guidance?
I remember an 8th grade histoory teacher once said "Most societies when they began had strong family units and high moral standards, when these fell it wasnt long before the nation fell and was taken over by its enemies. The fall came from within before they were conquered from without."
You FORCE religion on people that is wrong, but a lack of it is what you have in the former soviet union and china and cuba andother communist places.
There wont be a "perfect society" until JESUS returns.

America was started as one nation under God and it became the greatest nation in the world. Now that we are throwing God out of the picture, America is sliding backwards. The greatest in crime. Sexual immorality in every form. We are even being fleeced by our own corporate CEO's. There is no more business ethics towards our own people. Them 10 commandments were taken off of the school walls for fear that they may influence the children. Now the children are shooting each other. etc. etc. If Christianity was just a tool to be used to form a safe society, then I want it back.

yes, by default a religion is started. before start of human society, human kind used to live in groups but that was not society. as and when he advanced in his behaviour to live a life of secure, he introduced rules one by one. those binding rules made human being to become social!

This is why religion was started in gereral... There was a great reason why the ancient civilisation had their multitheistic gods. They had a god for theives, a god for war, a god for sex, a god for fishing, etc.

It was so that the people were constantly law abiding.

I think a question you should ask instead is when wasn't religion used as an instrument to control society?

Depends on where you mean. But if there is a common religion it is much easier to preserve order and peace, no one should deny that fact.
