You should try to find local pigeon fanciers. If you're going to face your fear of birds, pigeons would be the best start. Why? Because caged birds like Parrots and Parakeets are timid and even when tamed they still bite occasionally. Chickens may accidentally peck you, same for ducks. Pigeons and doves on the other hand, are harmless.
If you could find a pigeon fancier around you (I could probably email you a good list of them depending on where you live), they will more than likely welcome you into their loft. There they can let you pet the birds, or hold the babies. Work your way up until you're brave enough to hold on adult yourself. Don't worry about the flapping. Their intentions aren't to hurt you, they are afraid of you and want to get away. All pigeon fanciers know how to hold the birds to where it can't flap around, so that's a good thing when trying to get over your fear. After you get used to the pigeons, make your way over to a pet shop. The birds in there are probably tame by now, or at least the bigger ones are. Ask an employee if they can get one out so you can pet it. You'd probably want to start out with the smaller ones, like finches, parakeets, and cockatiels. Parrots and Cockatoos in pet stores are generally pretty tame if the place has enough business. The only reason I'd save those til last is because they are big...which might scare you...and their bite can hurt a lot. If one ever bites you, just push on the sides of the beak (where they come together at the face) and it should ease its grip. It might hurt, but just remember they aren't trying to hurt you. Most big exotic birds bite because you either annoyed them, or you're wearing something shiny (don't wear rings! I found that out the hard way, lol). From there you can go and see some little baby ducks or chickens, since I know they won't hurt you. And they're cute too!

Just take it one step at a time. Nobody is pressuring you to do anything, so go as slow as you need to feel comfortable. If you ever freak out because a bird flies by, just think of it like this...Why do birds fly? To get where they're going right? Their flying is like our walking. When you're walking down the sidewalk and people walk by minding their own business, you think nothing of it. In crowds, people are practically touching when they pass, but you still continue to move on like nothing happened. It's the same thing with birds. They fly by you not because they want to attack you or hurt you in any way, but because they are trying to go somewhere, minding their own business. So the next time a pigeon or seagull flies by looking for food, imagine it as some random guy running by on his way to McDonalds or something :)

I wish you luck with overcoming your fears! Consider what I said, and hopefully it will help.

Bird Phobia

I suggest you see a therapist who specializes in phobias.

She/he will first likely suggest you look at pictures of birds or even look at a magazine of birds. Look at it everyday beginning with 5 minutes. Build up your courage each day as you look at the birds. This is just the beginning of your recovery from this disorder.

Call any therapist and ask who they know who specialized in phobias. They will make a referral for you.

Oh! I was deathly afraid of birds for decades. Then I realized it was only when they flapped their wings near me. I got over it slowly by taking popcorn to the park and throwing it far from me, then closer. If you sit on the grass and have your knees up, then cover your head with your arms, you can deal better. It's something you have to work at or be like that all your life. I chose not to.

Go to a zoo and pet some Ostriches.
If you can do that, small birds will seem like nothing.

(How can anyone be afraid of a cute little bird???)

I would suggest facing your fears. Maybe get a bird or find somewhere to be around birds a lot so that you get used to them and realize that your fears are unfounded and irrational.

I'm a bit bird-phobic myself. I really get creeped out when they flap their wings above my head or fly close to my face. I don't know why I feel this way about them. I don't totally freak out like you seem to do but I get very uneasy when they're near me.

i used to have the same problem. the first time my mom bought me a bird, i wouldn't touch it. but i got a perch ( long stick ) and let it sit there while i was holding the stick. then i would put my finger up to it and let it step up in my finger. then i would let it rest on my chest. now i love birds. i let mine sit on my shoulder and chew on my earring. i kiss them and love them. i hope i helped you. but i don't know about wild birds. maybe you could go to a pond and feed the ducks some bread. let them take it right out of your hand. be careful. they might bite your finger on accident.
