i've had a history of kidney stones and kidney infections. i get a lot of nagging pains in my kidneys that only last for about 2-3 a few times a day. i always thought they were kind of like "phantom" pains or just normal if you've had kidney stones or something. could there actually be something wrong with my kidneys?

Yes

It might be as simple as that you don't drink enough water - then the calcium or urate chemicals in your urine are more concentrated and the stones can form.

Alternatively you might have some anatomical reason why you are prone to have more infections. Certain kidney infections can predispose you to having kidney stones.

If you have had several kidney stones and kidney infections and get ongoing nagging pains, it might be that you are passing small stones or getting a minor infection that you are fighting off.

Perhaps your doctor should investigate or refer you to a urologist for further investigations.

Absolutely.

You should talk to your doctor to be referred to a urologist. An ultrasound should be in order. Its not something you want to mess around with. How old are you? And do you know what type of kidney stone(s) you had?
