Yes it does require updates. Some games are not playable until it gets the update.

The PS3 doesn't "require" updates. Sony add's new features for the PS3 with the updates.
Sony has added new features with the PS3 such as: being able to print with a Canon and Epson Printer, use your own personal images for a background, customized PS3 themes, a Media Server connection that enables file sharing with your computer wirelessly, and a whole lot more.

Ya Its bull, I just got mine like a week ago and now I gotta update again.(and yes I HAVE to, COD4 wont let me play until I do...)
