I want to open a savings account for my niece...she's just a baby, but I'm thinking about her future. I think this is one of the best things that I could ever do for her. The only thing is, I'll end up doing it for all my future neices, nephews and my own kids! How would you feel about your child getting such a gift from their aunt??

Knowing me, I'll add something to it every time that I get paid! I'm hoping other relatives do the same.

Have you talked to the parents about this yet? Maybe they might have something to contribute. My husband and I saved our change during my first pregnancy to open a savings account for our daughter. It adds up after a while. Now, we put $10 every two weeks in. If we do that until she's 18, that will add up to over $4000. Do I think it's a good idea? Yes. You are thinking about college for this little girl. Here's your problem. In order to open an account for a minor, there has to be a sponsor who is her parent. You could say to the parents "Hey, I want to open a Savings account for your daughter. Will you go with me since I can't open it for her?" They will probably want to contribute something. I would love it if my sisters or brother did that for my children. But we also do it ourselves. Do you know if the child might already have a savings account? Bottom line: talk to the parents about it and see what they think. If they like the idea, then run with it.

While I would appreciate the thought behind it, the savings account needs to have one of the parents names on it, and be at the bank of their choice. I think it would be better to give them the money you were going to put into the account and tell them that is what it is for.

You may want to talk to them about it first, since as a parent I would almost feel that you were overstepping your boundaries doing it on your own. But I love that you are so concerned about your niece's future that you want to get things started for her!!

I think it is a very thoughtful gift that will help your niece later on. You could add to it for birthday's, other holidays, etc. Very nice gift!
