Funny! I sometimes take for granted that some people do not understand Christian jargon. It is an important lesson for us to understand we need to speak plainly or make sure the audience understands what we take so easily for granted.
As others have said it is not so much we fear God will kill them but rather he would watch over them and that their trip will be trouble free. Though in retrospect we should not be waiting for a trip to be praying for those we love and we should trust in God's unfailing mercy.

Traveling Mercy is a prayer for a safe trip and no it does not mean that if people don't receive them they will automatically be killed. That is not how God works. There is different forms of traveling mercies. maybe for safe road travel or for the time that person is away. Just as we ask that the Lord grants us traveling mercy and brings us back at the next appointed hour.

LOL -- Traveling mercies are what we pray for when someone goes on a trip - just that things will go well and easily for them - such as no long delays in the airport, no traffic mishaps or accidents.
It doesn't mean that God will kill them if they don't have traveling mercies - it just means we want their trip to go smoothly.

Some Christians are 'fleshly', and/or immature, and/or have domineering personalities. They are strong willed and 'control freaks' & this usually irritates the snot out of others who are more reserved introvert. I mean really, who wants to be controlled and dominated? The best way I've found to deal with a controlling Christian is to be direct; be VERY direct. Don't hint at what you feel or want. Don't beat around the bush. Be a strait shooter and tell them exactly what you need to. And setting a boundary is usually the best way to deal with them when they try to "force" their wishes upon you. (Remember a boundary isn't an attempt to change or control them. It's just saying what YOU are willing to do or not do or allow or not allow. Example, "If you're going to continue to scream at me today, that's your choice, but I'm walking away and will not talk to you until you apologize and treat me with respect.") There has to be consequenses with these types when they need to be called on their *stuff* because they're so strong willed. Usually to them a "No" means, not yet but if I push enough I can get you to change it to a yes. So holding your ground is usually required. Dealing with such people is challenging and at times very frustrating. I have however seen God work meekness into the lives of some very controlling Christians. It usually takes a severe trial to purge that out of them. Of course we all are stubborn and I've never met someone who doesn't have a strong will whether it's dominering like an extrovert or a silent will of steel like many relational introverts. But it goes back to their 'bent' of the sinful nature. There are many 'God types' who although they believe in God and have accepted Jesus as Lord, they fall back into thinking life, and the world, including everyone in their lives should revolve around them. It's our responsibility as Christians to remind them that no they are not on the throne; no, they can't treat others as subordinates and pee-ons; and no Jesus is Lord - they are NOT! It's the Christian thing to do! We all need to be put in time out sometimes! Great Question!

My wife died in a tragic automobile accident. She was on a mission of mercy at the time. She didn't get traveling mercies. Did someone not pray hard enough? I do not believe in a capricious God. The idea of "traveling mercies" is ridiculous.

It just means we pray they have a safe trip. No, God won't kill them w/o "traveling mercy", how ridiculous.

When you go on trips, like to Las Vegas, God doesn't really watch or know what goes on. There is mercy when you are travelling out of town for any sins that you might commit. Just as long as you don't commit any of those sins at home.

Isn t it the same as saying "have a safe trip"? Saying that does not guarantee that you will not be injured or God forbid, killed.
