Hi there...generally onions are considered toxic to cats, however the amount consumed has to be in a larger quantity than what your kitty accidentally ingested.
If you are ever in any doubt, please ALWAYS give your veterinarian a ring and they can help address any concerns you have about your cats wellbeing and if he needs to come in and be evaluated/treated respectively. It's much safer than entrusting anyone here on Yahoo Answers where there is no way to verify who is pranking or telling the truth.

Onions are toxic to both cats and dogs and cause damage to the red blood cells leading to anemia.
Having said that - the small amount of onion your cat ate shouldn't cause a problem as it was a very small "dose".
If you're worried about it or your cat seems weak or pale over the next couple of days then take him to his vet for them to look at a blood smear and to check for anemia. But again, with this amount of onion I wouldn't worry too much.

Yes, onions are very toxic in cats. Most of the toxic substance in onion is located near the skin and cooking will destroy many of the properties of the onion making it less harmful. Just eating 1 piece should not be life threatening.

I was surprised several years ago when my vet told me that onions and related plants like garlic and chives are toxic to cats. I had a cat that loved eating chives at that time and I immediately stopped letting her eat them. She did not develop any apparent problems from eating the chives, but I never let her (or any of the cats I've had since) eat them again.
After doing some research I discovered that onions are particularly toxic to cats, though they have to ingest very large quantities in order to develop the anemia that damages their red blood cells.
In your case I'm sure your cat hasn't eaten enough to cause serious damage, but if you are in doubt, call your vet just to see what he/she has to say.
Below is a link to concise information on onions and toxicity in cats.
Good luck!

Hello Makemead;
I would advise calling your Vet and asking him or her
just to be safe, but cat's get into things now and then.
I know onions are toxic for dogs, but if you will believe
my Pyrenees/Husky got into 2 day old Wonton Soup,
full of onions, I wouldn't eat, and she's fine. So, don't
worry too much, your little friend will probably be just fine.

Don't do anything!
Cat's should not be given onions or garlic often but a little now and again won't do anything at all...
My cat used to eat spicy foods that even I couldn't eat (and I'm a chili-head) and he lived to be 21 years old!
Just be more careful in the future and only let him eat the breading!

If he acts like there's no problem, then there is no problem. If he starts acting like he's not feeling well, call your vet for advice. Like somebody else said, some cats like to eat some strange things -- and in my experience, "people food" is almost always all right for them, especially in small amounts.
By the way, I disagree with the person who said that an 11-lb. cat is too heavy. I've had 3 of my healthy neutered males reach 18 lbs. and 2 were not even chubby, just big boys!

He will most likely be okay. As long as he was choking he will be fine. I have 3 cats and they will eat just about anything that you leave out. I don't reccomend feeding cats 'people' food, but it happens!
