I'm sure ir varies by indivdual dog, but in general what breed is the smartest? I plan on training the dog to be a concert pianist (and possibly conduct) and also a tattoo artist so creativity is also important. I plan on calling the dog Woodrow.

It depends on what you consider "smartest." Of the dogs I've had:

Border Collie - Herded kids away from the street, guarded the house, would not bark for a month if you showed her the bark collar (she LEARNED!)

Yorkie - Trained us (the owners/the OWNED) to microwave her food with cheese on it for exactly 12 seconds, not to look at her when she ate (do NOT upset the princess), to respond not to a "stupid bell," but to delicate foot steps by the front door to go outside.

Italian Greyhound - Sneakiest dog to ever make his way under a blanket. Sometimes you can't even tell where he is. Very stately looking.

For the piano function - try a yorkie/border collie mix. You will get an animal that can concentrate put is very graceful with it's paws.

For conducting - An IG, they are so regal looking, and mine has a "tuxedo" he wears every day.

For the tattoo artist profession, I can't help you there. Get something "creative," a true mutt.

A Doberman or Border Collie is your best bet. Border collies come in a "tuxedo" pattern so it would look really smart at the podium. Not sure if either would do well as a tattoo artist though:D Good luck with that.

add: Sorry I can't resist. Pit Bulls, Miniature Horses and various other breeds/mixes of dog have all been used as assistance animals. Therefore it really doesn't make one specific breed the best for the OP's "needs"

I beg to differ. I think the Working group would contain some of the smartest breeds. Herding group is based more on instinct. Although I agree that the Border Collie is an exception as well the Standard Poodle(non-sporting group)

Border collies are among the smartest breeds. This does not mean that all border collies should be named Einstein. I have a Canaan sheep dog and she is about the smartest dog I have ever had.

It is important to also note what traits a certain breed is bred for. Certain breeds will have natural traits that do not reflect the individual animals intelligence.

in fact any toy breed. Boxers curiously (i've got seen 2 posts on that on the instant). Labs besides. Aussies. i've got seen 'teacup papillons' (those have been a actual rip off because of the fact they have been easily an identical length as my incredible dogs, basically a advertising factor through a undesirable breeder). Goldens too. Saint Bernards.... i will't think of of something. ETA: Pocket beagles. Mini aussies and Klee Kais are easily arguable appropriate to the legitimacy. Aussies to me have 2 very different varieties- particularly under the traditional Aussies that are organic Aussies that look like Aussies and then the breeders applying shleties, cockers, papillons to reproduce right down to mini and toy Aussies. To me there are 2 communities. One is obviously irreputable the different falls interior the grey section for me.

That is a debatable question. Something like a Border Collie, Standard Poodle, Papillon or Golden/Labrador Retriever would probably be good for you. Interesting reason for wanting a dog, I must say...

Black Labradors are very intelligent dogs. Not to mention they are great with other dogs and have awesome personalities. They are a pretty low- maintenance too. Just make sure you do your homework on a professional breeder before you adopt one (if you decide to). By the way curdogharper, dogs are very SMART and FUN pets. Obviously you haven't had the pleasure of owning one, or else you would know...

I'd recommend a hairless dog. Who's going to trust a tattoo artist that isn't covered in tattoos?

I'd recommend a Xoloitzcuintle. They're actually big enough he can show off several of his own designs. Most of the others are too small to show off more than a couple tattoos.
