Religion provides a sense of community and belonging due to a commonality of belief. All religions provide this, and always have.
Unfortunately, the commonality of belief usually also provides justification for an "us against them" mentality, and a reason to despise "the other." All religions (some more than others) provide this, and always have.

people do good (which is good for the law...good for society) because they think god is watching.
it makes society function better after the death of family as well. we have people going back to their occupations (helping society run) because they are less sad if they think reuniting with loved ones will occur someday.
it does create tradition (holidays) that allow societies to better deal with the seasons of their own lifespans.
well....i have to disagree with gwen...i wish their herds thinned....but, it creates gathering places where like minded people can meat and procreate...it hampers our natural selection.
