The Three magi, Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthasar, presented the infant Jesus with the following gifts: Gold, from Melchior, was offerd to the child as gold in homage to a King; frankincense, from Gaspar, as a recognition of his divinity; and Myrrh, which historians have come to understand was testimony to the Son of Man who was to die.
Myrrh was commonly given in Jesus' day as a burial ointment to the family of one who was dying, or who had just recently died. It is also interesting to note that the rag soaked in the bitter wine, offered to Jesus whilst hanging on the cross, is believed by some to have been myrrh as well.
