Nurse Practioners or you may be thinking of Physician Assistants. Both are allowed to do certain types of invasive procedures and prescribe medicine and diagnostic tests.
Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nurse's Aids, and Medical Assistants are NOT allowed to do those things.

there are advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurses assistants. Any of these could be at the doctors office. Don't forget about the lab and xray techs

They may be nurses, whether RN or LVN. Or you may be thinking of Nurse Practitioner or Physicians Assistant. Both of those two are specialties separate from nursing.

I think you may be referring to RN's (registered nurses). There are also nurse practitioners, the most advanced nurses, with the power to write prescriptions and independently diagnose and treat patients.
