I'm an 18-year-old female, soon to be taking the ASVAB to enlist in the Marines. I took the practice test and scored an 80, which is apparently really good. I will take the oath of enlistment and officially enlist this Wednesday. Either tomorrow or the day after that, I'll be choosing my desired job. I want something in aviation. I know I can't fly anything because I'll be enlisted but what are the different jobs in aviation support that I can choose from? I know they'll tell me when the time comes to choose, but I'd like to research my options ahead of time.

Congrat.s! At the risk of a bad pun, the sky's the limit. You could do corrosion control (paint aircraft), be a bomb slinger (hanging ordinance), a refueler (pumping gas), ALICE (life support equipment), maintenance -- electronics, airframes, powerplants, instruments, lazer/fiber optics, etc., etc., etc..

E-mail me and I'll give you a few e-mail addresses of some old friends of mine.

Getting a score that high could easily lead to an invitation to to take the OCS test. Geez "80". My best IQ test was 134 and I only scored 64 on Induction Tests ( I'm old). The GT score will get you the invite to OCS. Anything over 110 I think. You could easily get flight school if you have excellent math skills. The Marines fly a helicopter or 2.

If that is not your thing look at the repair of Communications, Navigation or Stabilization equipment. The training can lead to many things once out.

Your options are going to reflect on how well you do on the actual ASVAB test. I'm not exactly sure if they allow females on helicopters as crew chiefs these days, but that's an option if you do want to be part of a crew. Other than telling you about maintenance, logistics and support for the air wings, you should get with your recruiter and ask what options you will have. Good luck!

If you are interested in aviation and mechanically inclined, I suggest becoming a mechanic. That puts you directly in contact with airplanes/helicopters and will give you an idea what the aviation world is like for females in the Marine Corps. I was a female pilot in the Navy and I know several mechanics who ended up becoming pilots. Good luck and keep your goals high!

The best aviation job, and hard to get, is Weather Tech/Forecaster.
