In the Bible people believe and then are baptized. Belief always precedes baptism. A baby cannot believe and cannot make a choice about salvation. So what is the point in baptizing a baby?

Tina T - First nice Christian love there. Second I would ask you to show me scripture for what you said but no scriptural support exists.

Hot Coco Puff - You cannot accept Jesus for someone else. Give me scripture to show you can accept Jesus for someone else. It does not exist.

This is yet another example of man-made doctrine that the Catholic church follows. Not only do they baptize infants, they believe they will go to hell if not baptized.

There is no point in an infant baptism. It holds no significace whatsoever from a Biblical standpoint. Water baptism itself has nothing to do with salvation. It is clearly stated in scripture that when one becomes born again in Christ, they are baptized with the Holy Spirit. A water baptism is simply a symbol of one death to self and birth to the Lord. It is an outward symbol, kind of like circumcision was for the Jews before Jesus. Now, it is not necessary, and Jesus circumsizes one's heart instead.

Not only do I not remember my infant baptism, since I was raised Catholic, but it meant absolutely nothing to me at all. My baptism on the beach after my spiritual birth, was a wonderfully meaninful time for me, and was a symbol of my new birth.

Children are sanctified under their parents faith until they can make a choice to follow the Lord and accept Him or not.

God bless.

Very good question Edge. Those who resort to rudeness and arrogant name calling here are only making themselves look bad. That type of behaviour is not the work of the Holy spirit. I hope that you have learned to ignore it.

Many Christians who practice infant baptism do so because they understand infant baptism as the new covenant equivalent of circumcision. In this view, just as circumcision joined a Hebrew to the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants, so baptism joined a person to the New Covenant of salvation through Jesus Christ. This view is unbiblical. The New Testament nowhere describes baptism as the New Covenant replacement for Old Covenant circumcision. The New Testament nowhere describes baptism as a sign of the New Covenant. It is faith in Jesus Christ that enables a person to enjoy to blessings of the New Covenant (1 Corinthians 11:25; 2 Corinthians 3:6; Hebrews 9:15).

theres no scriptural evidence children are not responsible for what they do not know Jesus left us an example that we should follow and everyone that got baptized in the bible was of age to make their own decision, dedication of a baby there is nothing wrong with that you are starting them on the path they should follow,I do not know why people think they can change Gods word.,there is no point in baptizing a baby.

Parents do that so the child has a guardian angel to protect him. I was baptized at 5 and called at 22. It worked out fine.

Dont know about Baptising an infant....
But we are to DEDICATE them to God after they are born..
In the Teachings of God the children were dedicated unto the Lord..especially the First Born......Cause the First Fruits are to be dedicated to God...of All that we recieve ............and that includes Blessing of a child !!

And thats not Baptising in water either..

As some traditions of man are , sprinkle water on them...
and call it baptismal...

Its dedicated them unto God and it says for us to do it...
in Fact we are to dedicate ALL we have unto God
and it also says to " raise a child in the way they should go , and when they are old they will not depart from it "

Mostly a tradition of man- However, In many churches today babies are dedicated- and the parents, grandparents and extended family including the church family vow to nurture that child to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Infant baptism is a symbol of the promise the parents make to God and those present to bring a child up as a follower of Jesus. It is also the time when the people who witness the ceremony promise to help raise the child as a follower of Jesus.

It appears none of the answerers have been to a baptism to see or hear what actually goes on in the ceremony but it is easy to criticize when there is no knowledge.

Allow the chose to be the there's. God gave free chose in Genesis. That came from a control issue out of fear based religious culture. Love the child and they will follow by the example you set. Maybe not at first but love always bring em back home!

The point in Baptising a baby is to protect them, in case God forbid, and thing were to happen, the child would be sure to go to Heaven. Because the child can not speak or make decisions, that is where the Godparents come in, and speak for the child, to renounce satan and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. I am a Godparent, and I gladly accepted when asked. Now, it is my responsibility to ensure that my Godchild will celebrate the anniversary of the holy day of the baptism each year with a visit, phone call, or a card; listen and share in the struggles and triumphs of living a Christian life, and keep myself informed on Christian doctrine and values, to be able to answer any questions as they arise; encourage a consistent life of faith through special cards, letters or gifts which celebrate holy events (Christmas, Easter), and personal growth events like graduation, first job, engagement; participate in and prayer as my Godchild receives the other sacraments, particularly First Communion and Confirmation, which complete initiation into the Church and community; I will be supportive of the child's parents in their role as the primary religious educators of their child; and most importantly, I will be a model of Christian living through daily prayer, virtue and active participation in parish life and liturgy. By living a Christian life in partnership with my Godchild, we will both experience the great joy of sharing a life of faith.

Excellent point, dear brother! While I can understand Christening a child or baby and taking a vow to raise them in a Godly atmosphere, I believe it is TOTALLY misconceiving to baptize those who aren't aware they are being baptized! Then they grow up thinking they're saved when they aren't. It puts them into a VERY dangerous position!

God bless you for asking about it!
