Difficult question. Some valid points on both sides of the argument.

On the pro side, more lives are saved; people who can afford it would take advantage of the opportunity leaving more donated kidneys for people that can't afford to buy one; it is the property of the owner and if they have a right to give it away, they should have the right to sell it; and a few others.

On the con side, low income people would be more likely to sell their organs; opportunities for fraud and other crimes related to open organ trade esp. targeted at less educated people; opposition from people that think it is "wrong" or unfair to people that can't afford to buy their life; and others.

I'd need to investigate a lot farther, but I'm leaning pro at the moment.

A better idea would be if more people would fill out donor cards or make it clear to their families that they want to donate organs when they die. We bury thousands of perfectly good organs every day. But, I think if someone wants to sell a kidney, that's the person's right. Of course, rich people will never have to make such a decision, and that's where the problems come in.

Well, I am sure I have fantasized about it to abolish debt, but considering my spending habits and eating habits I find it a win lose situation. Also my sister just had a little more than 25% of her kidney removed so I better hold on to it. Hmmm...maybe I could sell it to her! or at least make her appologize for dressing my GI Joe ACTION figures up in doll clothes!

It's ripe for abuse. People desparate for money risk their lives on behalf of the wealthy. Meanwhile, how will poor people get kidneys if the supply is bought up by the wealthy? Should we do the same for bone marrow transplants? More for the rich, less for the poor?

I think it is a horrible idea. I am all for organ donation, but not for money. The people who are donors are risking their lives for a few bucks. It is extremely exploitative of people in poverty.
