I love this question because it comes up way too much. The "Chase System" is designed to put strategy into play rather than just an all-out session of driving fast and turning left. Both the 48 and 24 shared everything. From parts to notes, the two teams worked in tandem with each other. It was up to team strategy and driving style to win the championship.
Jeff Gordon and Steve Letarte ran all-out all season. When the time came to snag the championship victory, they didn't have it in them anymore. Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus know that it takes more than just leading laps to win the championship. Sure the "W"s help but overall it doesn't dictate the championship. Skillful driving and strategic command does.
Had the chase for the championship been done (mathematically) 10 weeks early, my interest, as well as a great many others would have slightly been dwindled. In a 36 season sport, every free Sunday you can get is an opportunity. Knowledge that my driver didn't have a chance in winning so far back looses the priority of my "having" to watch.
This year's Busch Championship is a prime example of what could happen. When Carl Edwards locked it down weeks ago and even NASCAR officially announced his victory, it seemed senseless to see what happens next.

I am a Jeff Gordon fan and I think he should have won, because he had the lead all season until the last few races. Its like having something for a year then someone just comes and takes it. Jimmy Johnson won and Jeff Gordon will still get money because he owns Johnson's car. It didn't really matter except for the fact that Johnson got back to back championships and Gordon didn't make the record.

I don't like the chase at all. Haven't since it started. For the entire season Jeff out pointed Jimmie by over 400 points. Then in the ten races in the chase Jimmie out pointed Jeff by 57. (Remember he had a 20 point lead at the start of the chase.) I think the points system is fairer now than ever before, right up until the chase starts. As long as you can stay in the top 12 for 26 weeks you can win the Cup by being great in the last 10 weeks. Total garbage in my opinion.

I realize Jimmie did win 10 races this year compared to Jeff's 6 wins, but since NASCAR has changed format to the chase, in which I can't stand, Jeff would have won the championship this season. I mean he has a 400+ point lead in race 25 & in 1st place & goes 20 points back after race 26 when they had points reset & in 2nd place. Jimmie was in 5th or 6th place prior to points being reset. I have nothing against Jimmie Johnson as a driver but I feel Jeff deserved the championship since he was in 1st place pretty much the whole season. I wish NASCAR will re-do this whole chase format. I think it sucks. How can one justify Matt Kenseth winning title? What kind of stats did he have to earn the title?

I WANTED Jeff to win and with the season he had he would have.....if not for JJ. I'm glad Matt finally got one, but he in no way shape or form should have won the championship this year.
The bottom line is when you have a 36 race season two things should count Consistancy AND Wins. Did JJ's 4 more wins in the chase outweigh his 4 DNF's in the "regular season". Yes, only because they stripped 400 points from JG.
While JJ was winning Jeff was getting top 5's and 10's. When Jeff was winning JJ was DNFing. I agree that the person with the most wins should be up there in the battle for the championship but the bottom line is the person entering the chase in the lead should not have all his points taken away. And F.O. to all you people who are frothing out yer butts saying that in baseball all teams are equal going into the payoffs and the Patriots dont go into the post season with points. This is NASCAR not football or baseball.
And to MPV above - Dude, get off the meds (or get back on them). No way did JEFF have ANYTHING to do with Jimmie Pitting....holy crap, thats the single biggest load of conspiracy **** I've heard in a long time.
And to Dale Fan - Except that 4 DNF's in the 26 races to the chase didnt seem to count for much, especially when the Chase wiped out the 400 pt lead Jeff had because of them.

Johnson won it because that is how the points system works. If the points system were different, then perhaps someone else would have won the Championship.
The sanctioning body, NASCAR, determines the way the championship is decided, and the driver that wins the championship has to do so by the method put in place by NASCAR. So it really doesn't matter except that the person who won, should have won.

I think Jimmie earned it. He won 10 races for heaven's sake! Though I think NASCAR should have given Jeff at least 10 points for having the points lead for literally the entire season except for what 3 races??? They both deserved it, but Jimmie came up front. I really thought Jeff had the championship in his hands, but Jimmie stated his engine and drove off with it. I wish Jeff would have won it for Ella and Ingrid.

It's crazy to think that Matt Kenseth should have won it. Are you basing this on anything other than the fact that he's your favorite driver?
Jimmie won the championship under the current rules, which means he deserves it. The current rules however, leave a lot to be desired. Taking the 300+ point lead away from Gordon at the end of the regular season is like taking away the homefield advantage from the Colts last year.

I am not even a Gordon fan and I think he should have won it. How many times is Jimmie Johnson's crew chief going to be caught bending (cheating) the rules before they give the team a real penalty instead of slap on the wrist.

obviously Jeff Gordon, he was by far the best over the course of the year. He had a big lead going into the chase and ran well during the chase. But for NASCAR setting up fake rules that gave the fourth place car going into the chase the lead, Jeff would have won. What other sport makes the best team throughout the regular season start behind in the playoffs? Will the Patriots have to go play a road game in the wild card to make the Superbowl? I DON'T THINK SO!!!
