The angel who told her she'd have a baby told her his name would be Jesus. It means Emmanuel-"God with us".

Now this is a question!
God did! Ever since Isaiah 7:14. God with us!
Okay, but you did ask about the name Jesus. which is the greek form of the hebrew name Joshua. Which is short for Jehosua. Which litterally transalated means God Saves, or God our Salvation. Now in Luke it says they(Mary and Joseph) called the Baby, Jesus. Remember though that it was an Angel sent from God-key phrase here-that said to her "and shall call His name Jesus".
Luke 1:31 & 2:21
So does that help out? God Bless.

Well the Angel Gabriel told Joseph to name Him Jesus. I think God originally came up with the name. The name means Yahweh saves.

Some biblical translator in the 1600's came up with the name. There has never been a Jew named Jesus.

According to the Bible, God's messenger angel told Jesus's mother to name him Jesus. Jesus is the a modified version of the name Joshua, which in turn is modified from Jesus's Hebrew name: YahShua which means "God (Yahweh) is salvation"
(Etymology: Hebrew YÄhÅshÅ«a)
Luke 1
[30] "And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God."
[31] "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS."

I am editing what I wrote earlier. I just found this great article that talks about it. It says that Jesus is the English translation of the Greek translation of the Hebrew name Yeshuah. http://www.plim.org/JesusOrigin.htm

Christ means "The Annointed One"
the origins trace back to pagan sun worship.
