This recipe uses canned pumpkin pie mix. I know that a lot of people prefer sweet potato pie over pumpkin. I am just curious if there is such a thing as canned sweet potato pie mix. Can I simply swap out the pumpkin mix and put sweet potato mix in it's place?
I am trying to keep the recipe as simple as possible, so my 4 year old daughter can help as much as possible, but still end up with a great tasting dessert for turkey day.
Thanks in advance.
Here is a link to the recipe, it is the second recipe on the page.

Okay so I found some sweet potato pie filling, can I just swap the cans and use the potato instead of pumpkin? I assume so, but I haven't heard of this anywhere on line.

I found the pie filling online, but I didn't see it in our local Wally World when I was there picking up pie supplies this afternoon. I found the candied yams though. I live near Buffalo, NY. My husband grew up near Montgomery, Alabama though, so I figured I'd make something for him. My mother goes gaga over pie whenever a big meal comes up, so while I like Pumpkin pie myself, I'm sure there will be 4 (at least). Not to mention the peach cobbler, and cherry, and peanut butter fudge, and cookies, and cupcakes. Yum yum. Anyway. Thanks everyone for your help. We will make it up as we go and hopefully it will be edible when we get done. ☻

P.S. Did you find the sweet potato pie mix at your store? I can get Bruce's sweet potatoes, but not the other stuff, and I'm not that far from Louisiana. I would just swap the potato pie mix for the pumpkin, yes. No other changes. May I ask where you live that you found this?
I live in the south, have baked and eaten many sweet potato pies, but have never seen potato pie mix. I think you can do your recipe with canned sweet potatoes, but it's not going to be as simple as the original recipe, because some adjustments will need to be made.
The Libby's 30 oz can has 3 1/2 cups of "stuff" in it. Pumpkin pie mix has added sugar and flavorings. If you want to use sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin in your recipe, buy some canned sweet potatoes and mash them. Add 1 1/2 tsp of pumpkin pie mix, or add 3/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ginger, and 1/4 tsp allspice OR cloves, and 1/3 cup sugar. You don't have to have exactly 3 1/2 cups of potatoes.
I would not use fresh-cooked (or even leftover home-cooked) sweet potatoes for this, because they don't have enough moisture. Your cake will be too dry. Be sure your potatoes are well mashed. If your sweet potatoes have sugar added and are really sweet, you can skip the 1/3 c sugar mentioned above.
In the interest of keeping the recipe simple, I suggest you use pumpkin instead of sweet potatoes, but I believe the suggestions above will give you a good result.
And, I found a recipe for a sweet potato dump cake online. Here it is. I think you can go with the flavorings above if you want and skip the orange slices and extract, or you can make the recipe as its written below (personally, I'd use 2 tsp grated orange peel instead of the orange extract):
SWEET POTATO DUMP CAKE
4 cans mandarin orange slices, drained well
1 teaspoon orange extract
¼ cup sugar
3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 box yellow cake mix
2 sticks margarine
Pecan halves
Mix together extract, sugar, and potatoes. Place orange slices in bottom
of baking dish. Spread potatoes over slices. Pour box of yellow cake mix
over potatoes. Melt 2 sticks margarine. Drizzle over cake mix then put
pecan halves over mix. Bake 350º for 25-30 minutes or until cake is done.

Sorry I don't think they make sweet potato pie mix - you could call a local baker and see if you can purchase enough for 1 pie though (should be about 1/2 the price of the finished pie). I have bought cookie dough from bakeries in the past so it is worth a try. If not just go with the recipe as is it looks yummy and your daughter will really love helping! Good Luck!

Twice the batter for any cake recipe (or 2 packages of cake mix, prepared) Twice any white frosting recipe (or 2 cans white frosting) Food coloring 1 Hostess Ho-Ho® (or similar cake-roll snack item) Prepare two cakes in bundt pans and cool completely. Color most of the frosting a deep orange, reserving about 1/2 cup, which should be colored black (or use dark chocolate fudge frosting). Place one bundt cake upside down (rounded side on the bottom) on a cake plate; frost the top only. Place the second bundt cake flat-side down on top of first cake. Frost the entire cake with orange frosting, making up and down motions with spatula to simulate a pumpkin. Insert the Ho-Ho® in the middle of the top of the bundt cake to make the stem. Use black frosting to make eyes, nose, mouth, etc. (Or use candies, gum drops, jelly beans, black rope licorice -- be creative!)

Sorry they don't make it, Just add the seasonings as you would for pumpkin. Little known secret. You can substitute carrots for the pumpkin, or squash and with the spices, no one can tell the difference. Yep, did it.

I've never heard of sweet potato pie mix in a can. It depends on the area you live in, if you live in the South, it might be easier to find. I hope you find it. Good luck, it sounds good.
