* You didn't mention hunting. If it's just shooting paper, get a good .22 LR. Blow up 500 rounds at the range and you don't have a sore shou;lder, you had lots of fun, you honed your shooting skills, and it only cost you a few bucks.
Once well practiced, you're ready for those pesky squirrels and rabbits (take 'em home; eat 'em up; yum). It will also take coyotes at reasonable ranges (don't tke 'em home and eat 'em up; Yuck). Fun.

Well target shooting covers a lot of things. Practice for hunting, causal plinking and serious competition. For hunting practice a a good 22 with a similar sighting system as your hunting rifle. For plinking the Ruger 10/22 or any of a large number of bolt or lever action 22. For entry level target shooting Savage makes a heavy Barrel 22 with target sights for About $325. I shoot in a sanction match event called "Vintage Rifle" in which old military bolt actions are fired on the standard match targets at 100 or 200 yards, a $100 Mosin Nagant would get you into that. At the high end the are some very fine 22 target rifles and for the longer ranges (200-1000 yards) 7.62 Nato rifles usually built for that purpose. There are also some Target configuration AR-15 M1A and M-1 Garands . Rifles for this type of competition are in the $1000+ category

i would suggest, that if you are planning on doing some hunting, do your practice & targets, with the same gun that you will be hunting with
