The larger insurance companies are usually the ones with the highest turn over and most openings. Start by applying to them. You'll have the best chance of getting on with them.

Most insurance companies require a 4 year degree. It can be in anything - even underwater basket weaving - but you got to have it. Good communication skills and conflict resolution are a must. Organization helps.

Keep in mind - not all insurance companies are the same. Some treat their employees like cr.ap. I started at one of those.
(It was one of the big ones).

But, if the company you start with is one of those - stick it out for 1-2 years. Learn as much as you can and then try to get on with a better company.

As you work claims - you'll speak to adjusters at other companies. If you get one that seems friendly, ask what it's like to work at their company. I've never been insulted when anyone asked me about my company and I have never had anyone get mad when I asked about theirs. Ask more than one adjuster at each company. Sometimes you may just catch someone on a bad day. So you don't want to take just one opinion and write the entire company off.

Join your local claims association. This will help you make contacts with other adjusters and vendors that you use (rental car company managers, private investigators, restoration companies, jewelry replacement services etc.).

Take the insurance classes. Work on your General Certificate in Insurance (INS) and Associate in Claims (AIC). If you get really ambitious - your CPCU. Most companies will pay for you to do this or will reimburse you when you pass. These are offered through the insurance institute. http://www.aicpcu.org/

Being an insurance adjuster is a hard job and it's not for everyone. You bust your fanny for little to no thanks. Some times you bend over backwards so far you can kiss the back of your knees and the customer still complains - says it's not enough.

But it gives you the opportunity to really help people when they need it - even if they don't appreciate it.

It keeps you mentally challenged. You will never reach a point where you know it all. It's an ever changing environment and you have to be able to hit the ground running and keep running.

There are all kinds of adjusters - auto, homeowners, cat (catastrophe), workers compensation, appraisers. If you get tired or board of one type - you may be able to branch into one of the other types.

I'm with my 3rd company. Now I am a true multi-line adjuster - I do auto and homeowners claims. I handle liability and write estimates on cars and houses. I'm not what most people expect when they need their roof checked!

I started out as an inside adjuster and did that for about 7 years. Then I changed companies and got a field position. I plan on staying with this company until retirement.

I come from a family of adjusters - so I know a little about what I was getting into. As my daddy said "You'll never be rich but you will always be able to support your family." Since he was a claims man - I can't argue with that. I never got the pony I always wanted...but I had braces and a nice house and a good middle class up bringing.

Good luck to you!

Short answer is to contact the Georgia DOI and determine what is required. Commissioner Oxendine's office shuold be able to point you in the right direction.

You might also contact claims adjusting companies in Georgia and let them train you and get you licensed.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you!

It is not so much a matter of age but instead education and experience. Nowadays companies are requiring a bachelors degree to even go into an on the job training situation. That puts you in at around age 21. Some will want prior experience as well as the degree.
