I believe you are referring to Camp Douglas, which was also called the "Andersonville of the North". It was a civil war prison camp for confederate soldiers. The source below is for the link to a web site giving its history.

honestly, i am not aware of any maps or sites in Chicago. i had thought it more on issue between north and south. confederate and yankee states. north was the ticket to escape ?

there is an african american history sort of musuem that i keep intending to go to and maybe they will give me more education that what i have ?
i believe that underground railroad operated wasn't Chicago a stop and then crossings made thourgh detriot to Canada ?
