Actually, it isn't all that hard to follow. I won't go into the historical background, but currently (as of the 2007 season) the points are awarded thusly:

Each race is worth 185 points. The winner gets 185 points. Second through sixth place each drop by 5 points (2nd gets 180, 3rd gets 175, etc.). The drivers who come in 7 thru 12 have a 4 point drop; the remaining drivers 13-43 have a 3 point drop. The drivers then have 5 bonus points added if they led a lap (they have to be leading when they cross the start-finish line in that lap for the lead to count); the driver who leads the most laps during the race gets an additional bonus of 5. So the winner of a race automatically gets 5 bonus points (because they were leading a lap at the end). If that driver also led the most laps during the race, he gets the bonus points on top of that, for a max of 195 points.
