My puppy (well, she's about a year and a half) has a spot on her side that was thinning, and is now bald. Tonight all of a sudden she has started crying, like she would do if someone had stepped on her paw. She does it randomly, and it sounds as if she is in pain, but then will be fine. It's late so I can't take her anywhere right now, but I'm wondering if there might be something seriously wrong?

She has an appointment at the vet first thing tomorrow morning. (I'm sure after describing the problem if they thought it was severe they would have told me to come today....) Anyway, anyone have any idea how much this is likely to cost me tomorrow?! lol...never had a problem like this.

This could be a number of things
Hot spot: an area of the skin that is basically infected and becomes sore and the dog will loose hair there. it will feel hot to the touch.
Ringworm: This is a bacteria that infects the skin and will cause hair loss and usually a flakey look to the affected area.
Mange: A parasite that infects the skin and caused itching and hair loss. Athough your dog has a localized problem, not usually the case with mange.
Your dog could be very uncomfortable and thats why she is screaming, it could be from a bacteria or parasite bugging that area.
In any case, I would call a vets office that has an emergency service available. The person whom awnsers will be qualified to talk with you and see if its something urgent or something that can wait till morning, The vet is not going to want to come in unless it is truly an emergency, so don't feel that they will ask you to come in becasue they want the money
COST:
Well, depends on the vet. The visit will probably cost around 60-70 dollars. If it is ringworm it will depend on the medication you use. The vet will probably prescribe some sort of topical ointment, should be under 20 bucks. You could also ask if over the counter human ointment will work. We treat ringworm at the shelter I work at with anti-fungul ointments bought from the store

Hi,
Sounds like something is obviously causing her discomfort. If you can't call a vet and ask for some advice then take her first thing in the morning. Internet is not the place for a diagnosis because you will only frighten yourself with all of the different possibilities that will most likely be nothing like what is wrong with your dog. If your dog seems to be in serious pain, is uncomfortable, has breathing difficulties, lethargic etc then she needs to see a vet tonight rather than tomorrow. If she is otherwise fine keep an eye on her overnight and take her in tomorrow. Good luck!

She might have ticks or a kind of bug that is eating her fur and stuff. It might not be eating her fur, but be doing something to her skin that is causing the fur to drop off. In the morning, take her to a vet and have it checked out. For now, just soak a washcloth or rag into cold water and put it over the spot where it's bald. If it is "bugs", the cold water will cause them to stop for a while. Don't Use Hot water because it will make them move even faster. Just put the cold water on and then if she stops whining, keep doing the same thing every few hours or whenever she starts whining until you can take her to the vet to get medication.

Did you even bother taking her to the vet at all when this started? Ya, obviously there's something wrong. Bald is obviously not good. If she is crying then obviously there is something wrong! Take her to the vet FIRST THING tomorrow morning. And no excuses about money or whatever. You can't just let problems slide. Not everything goes away on it's own you know. It's come down to being cheap or saving your dog. I would pick save my dog.

Might be "ring worm" . If you have an ointment for itch or infections, rubbed it on the spot. If that doesn't help take to a vet first thing in the morning.

It sounds like what my 8-week-old pup is going through-but without the hair loss. Good luck finding out what could be wrong.

Call a vet. There should be an emergency vet somewhere in your area who you can call. Otherwise, take her first thing in the morning.
