Earlobes are cartilage. It does hurt some. You can get it done where ever they sell earrings.

Don't get it done with a piercing gun. Those are horrible, and can possibly give you hepatitis. They can't be properly sterilized, which means the invisible blood microspray left on the gun after the thousands of people who got "pierced" is still there. That and those people could have had something, like hepatitis. That's something that can kill you. My piercer told me that one piercing gun was the source of thousands of cases of hepatitis in the area. Not good at all, the piercing gun should be banned.
The little studs they pierce you with aren't long enough to accommadate swelling. And the crappy butterfly backing is a great harbor for bacteria, which can make your piercing get infected. Same with the crappy solution Claires and those places give you - another great harbor for bacteria, and some of the crap found in those "piercing solutions" is the same type of stuff that's found in household cleaners. That can't be good for a piercing.
Get pierced at a tattoo/piercing shop WITH A NEEDLE. It'll be a lot less painful, and easier to heal in the long run.
Also, there are tons of places in your cartilage you can get pierced. Check out pictures on www.bmezine.com .. there are lots of them.

First of all, please do not go to Claire's or anywhere like that that uses a gun to pierce. I know you will get a lot of people telling you that they went there and had no problems, blah blah blah. Just think about this, there is absolutely NO WAY to sterilize the gun. The gun can cause damage as it uses blunt force.
Please go somewhere that uses a sterile, packaged, disposable needle to pierce. The healing time is quicker, the pain is less and the outcome is much better.
You pain question: To me, it didn't really hurt at all. I've heard that it does but for me it didn't.
Yes, you can do it yourself but you absolutely should not. You don't have the proper tools to do it. You run a greater risk of it getting infected, causing damage because of inexperience and so on.
**EDIT: I thought I would add this link too:

Try looking around for some peircing shops, some well known ones, not back alley or shady buisinesses.
I personally don't have my cartilage peirced, but I have quite a few friends that do.
It does hurt more then a regular ear peircing on the earlobe, since the peircing is in a spot where there is 'feeling' and lots of sensors in the ear.
But It shouldn't hurt TOOO bad if you have a high pain tolerence.
And you're right for not peircing it yourself, you could damage or hurt your ear. You should always try and get peircings done by professionals.

Cartilage should always be pierced with a needle NOT a gun! There are a lot of options within the cartilage though -
Helix, rook, anti-helix, tragus, rook, daith, anti-tragus etc..
(you can see what they are here if you don't know: http://www.bellaonline.com/ArticlesP/art13198.asp )
I have helix, rook and anti-helix :)
Helix hurt the least, then anti-helix, and rook (which I got done 2 days ago) was the worst but still not terrible.
Don't do it yourself though, the risk of infection is pretty high and you could get a keloid/some nasty scarring. Better to spend the money on a professional and have a healthy piercing!
Go to a tattoo/piercing parlour NOT CLAIRE'S.

cartilage is not as tough as bone. ever heard of a deviated septum? if something goes wrong like you get an infection or have some other bad reaction to the piercing cartilage can actually rot away. u don't say what cartilage but try your ear before you do your nose. just to see how your body reacts to this.

Yes, it hurts. I won't lie; I have a very high threshold to pain, but when I got mine done, it was a big ouch! Get it done at a professional piercer--do NOT, under any circumstances, do it yourself. Do NOT, under any circumstances, get it done with a piercing gun. You need to find a piercer who does it by hand, with a needle. Try www.bmezine.com for reviews of places in your area, and don't be afraid to ask people with piercings where they got them done and how their experience was--we love talking about them.

PLEASE do not go to Claires. The guns are nothing but trouble, and can really damage your ear. Its not a chance you want to take.
100% agreed with the posts with this opinion. You should pay attention. I just wanted to throw in my extra weight.

Don't do it yourself. Just about any tattoo shop will do it, and mine hurt like HELL. But I don't regret it. It's hella sore for a while, and you can't sleep on that side or use the phone on that side for a while, and it's easy to catch your hair on it, but if ya wanna do it, go for it!
