Ive just had an argument with a christian who claims she follows the Bible,no exceptions..therefore she donates 10% of her income,
Im all for tithing that is wonderfull, our argument was this
suppose you were barely making ends meet, say you made 200 week, therefore, you are required (she says the bible says)to give 20$ a week, that should come before ANYTHING else
I understand it coming before such things as a new pair of shoes, going to the movies etc...but i asked her
if that 20$ was the money you needed to put food in your childs mouth, wihout it,the child would go hungry, would you still give it to your church, over feeding your child
she said yes,absolutly,!!!
I then asked her if she was a mother,to which she said not yet,but her decision would be the same
what are your thoughts
how many of you would donate to your church before you bought your childs groceries for that week???

Tithing is an Old Testament Law, and we know that the OT (with its commandments and regulations) was completely abolished and canceled at the cross. The New Testament just tells us to give generously.
2 Corinthians 9:5: "So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given."
2 Corinthians 9:6: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously."
2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
Not one scripture in the NT mentions tithing!!!
EDIT: I would give to the church AND feed my kids. The reasoning behind this is I fully believe in God's grace , and that he helps us in times of need. If I rely on him he will not let me down. I would give less than normal if I was running short of money. I have a very hard time with faith, I will admit it. I would still give though and pray my hardest!!!! God has always been there for me, so I don't know what my problem is!

The funny thing about tithing is that if you truly believe in Jesus Christ and give with faith you will always have enough. It is just as Malachi said in chapter 3 verse 10. If some one tithes 10% to the Lord I have never seen it take food away from a childs mouth. Now sometimes it is because someone brings food over or maybe that person finds money on the ground but what ever it is it seems the lord looks out for his people. Sometimes when you tith it does not come back as a monatary increase but as a spiritual increase. But that seems to happen to those who seem to have enought after tithing to put food on the table.

I don't have children, but I will tell you from personal experience that for a few months I hadn't paid my tithes because of starting a new job and catching up on bills because I was out of work for a few months.
I stopped going to church as much as I used to because of the crazy hours I work, so not being there was an easy excuse not to pay.
It started burdening my heart that I was putting God last, when I thought about tithing there wasn't much money left.
Well last week when I got paid the first thing I did was stopped by my church and paid my tithes, I didn't even wait till Sunday.
When I got to work that evening my boss told me he had put in that I get a raise.
Coincidence or God's Blessing?
God said to trust in Him and He would provide abundantly.

Tithing is an act of obedience and faith. Giving to God of our first fruits (10%) and believing He will meet our needs. Is it easy? Absolutely not. Do I always tithe? No.
The Lord loves a cheerful giver.
More than 10% of my money, (which is all His anyway) or 10% of my time, He wants my heart.
With that I'm going to get off this stupid computer and go open my Bible and spend the rest of the evening reading it.
Happy Thanksgiving

You need to ask her again if she claims she follows the Bible, no exceptions again before you hit her with this.
After having her reaffirm this, then ask her to show you in the Bible where it says she is to tithe 10% of her income. Nowhere does it say this. What it does command, in the old covenant, is that Israel to "tithe" off the increase of produce and livestock ONLY. Those who worked for wages never paid tithes.
Then there is the issue of tithing being an old covenant command, and the old covenant points of law are not carried forward into the new covenant.
Her "church" has her snowed, big time.
You might point out to her if she still insists on tithing on her income that Scripture allows her to sell her "future" baby into slavery if the baby is female, seeing as she won't have enough money to buy the baby food, as she will be allowing wolves in sheep's clothing (wool suits) to rob her like that.

There is nothing in the New Testament that says the amount is fixed at 10%
We use that figure because it was used in the Old Testament when people gave 10% of their posessions.
The amount you give is up to you and between you and God.
Some people can afford to give more, some less.
God doesn't want your babies to go hungry. IMO, it would be a sin in itself to give to the church to the point of your family going without the necessities of life.

It's not about you not wanting to feed your child...of course everyone would want to do that.
It IS about...Do you acknowledge that EVERYTHING belongs to God? ...(including our very lives and the lives of children)
The first 10% IS GOD'S portion ...that is why the scripture is phrased...
"Would a man ROB God?"
Malachi 3: 8 ¶ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Paying tithing is not about the money...it is about a person's faith....God doesn't need anyone's money...but it could help sanctify a person and increase their faith in God...if they will trust in Him....otherwise isn't your faith just 'lip service'
HIS promise is that the windows of heaven will be opened and that there will not be room enough to receive the blessings...I have found His promise to be true inasmuch as I have been faithful.
The first 10% is God's ....period...I will do my best with the rest.

Yes i would. because it also says in the Bible you reap what you sow. so if you are always giving God whats left over even if its just after you buy your groceries and thats it. then what if God always gave you what was left over. if he just gave out all his blessing to everybody else before you...how would you feel???
but also a lady that goes to my church. she was like dirt poor, and she barely had enough money to pay anything, but she paid her tithes and everyday when it was dinner time she would sit her family around the table and thank God for the food that she had/didnt have. and alot of the time people came up to her door, even people she didnt even know, and they had bags full of groceries for her. they said that they were led by God to bring her some groceries.
so i believe that if you always give God the first of your fruits even if you just set that money aside before you pay anything then God will always provide you with your needs. he says in the Bible that he knows your needs. so that what i think.

I sure as hell wouldn't. That is one of the things that I thought was ridiculous about the mormon religion (I am a non-active mormon) you have to pay to get to heaven... that doesn't sound right to me.
Some bum living in the street has nothing but his faith, he goes to church and has no money to give... so what, is he not going to heaven?
There is no way that I would donate money to a church before feeding my children.

You must feed your child first.
Also, God does not want you to feel like you "have" to give money to Him. He wants you to give cheerfully. It is not how much you give it is how you give it.
It is stated in the Bible: Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
