I've actually met two modern famous artists. The first was Andy Warhol. I really didn't get a chance to talk to him because the gallery was full of his hanger-ons and I probably would have said something insulting to him if I did talk about his art.

The second artist was Georgia O'Keeffe. By the time I met her she was already very old and I really didn't discuss her art, although I greatly admired it and wanted to. But she was kind enough to give me and my young daughter a tour of her Ghost Ranch studio near Taos. Even though she hated publicity she was always supportive and encouraging to young (which I was at the time) artists.

If it were possible to actually meet and talk to artists about their works I would have to pick both Dali and Gauguin. Dali because I would want to get into his head and Gauguin because I've always considered us somewhat kindred spirits. Like Gauguin, I walked away from finical security in my early 40s to free up time to become a serious artist.

First I would ask an artist what it means to be an artist. What is the role of art in our world? How does the artist feel about contemporary art today? Every artist has a muse and I would like to know what person or persons have had the greatest affect on the artists' work ,and the artists life? Who has been the artist's mentor or gave him (her) moral support to help the artist get through the difficult and dark days when no one seems to notice or care about his work? Then I want to know what a painter was thinking about when he painted a particular piece? Why does the artist choose to paint abstracts or landscapes or people? What is the artists favored medium? Finally does an artist ever reach a stage where there is no more desire left, nothing left for him to paint?

I would ask them what type of studies taught them the most. Also what moments in their lives sparked understanding of art. I remember my first 'spark' and it completely changed my view of the world, I'm sure a master must have had many.

I would want to meet Leonardo DaVinci, and ask him "what did you say to Mona Lisa just before you painted her to make her have that famous smile"?

I'd ask them where they get inspiration, how they knew they wanted to paint, and , of course, if they could teach me!
