I want to make rice like we ate when we were living in Hawaii. When they put it on your plate, it stays in a ball and is so yummy. Is this a special rice? Is it called sticky rice? If so, how do you make it?

You buy short grain rice and use 2 cups of water to 1 cup rice.Bring to a boil and then turn it to medium low put lid on and cook 20 minutes. You will have perfect sticky rice.

I dont know what type of rice they eat in hawaii, but it IS a special type of rice.

Sushi rice (short grain sticky rice) which is popular in japan and korea (it might be the same kind of rice as used in risotto, because they both look the same to me, but I've never tested that theory)

or

glutenous rice/sticky rice/sweet rice (long grain) which is popular in thailand and south east asia. it looks like regular rice, but is very white and opaque.

You may have to go to a specialty store, but I find nowa days they're both avalible in a bigger grocery store. The sushi style rice is generally more expensive though.

Aditional info: Jasmine rice is usually made using a regular/dry type rice. It'll only be "sticky" if you cook it too long in too much water. It is good though, just not when it's sticky.

The recipe I use is Jasmine rice. Boil one cup of rice in 1 3/4 cup water as soon as it boils turn off heat cover and let set for 18 min. I use it for sushi and It works awesome.

Use glutinous rice. Cook the same way as normal rice except you need to soak the glutinous rice overnight before cooking.
