Isaiah 40:22 "It is he who sits above the circle of the Earth" - provides no indication that ancient sheep herders believed that the Earth was a sphere while science lagged behind.. truly pontificating that the earth was flat and round like the moon.....

Discuss?

Cripes, is everyone this uneducated?

Go look up the Hebrew word that was translated into Circle. The idea of the circle is and has been widely known for thousands of years. The idea of a sphere is less well known across time. If you used the word sphere to a person from the middle ages who was not educated, and most of them were not, you would have lost them.

You are asking that God use words in the Bible that you are comfortable with because of your level of knowledge without regard to the level of knowledge for the majority of the people of the Earth through out time.

That is as dumb as expecting the word "dinosaur" to be in the Bible. How could people translating a Bible into English back in 1611 use a word that was not even invented yet AND would only have been used by a few scholars if it had been invented.

And yes, the Hebrew word translates into sphere depending on the usage.

Why are the writers always called "Sheepherders " by you agnostics?Isaiah was a highly educated member of the royal family.Saying "It is He that sits above the circle of the earth"...is indeed saying it was round .Also said is "God formed the earth and hung it upon nothing".
This was at a time when the Greeks said Atlas held up the earth and the Hindus claimed a stack of elephants did.The Bible is the only book of the time that recognized the constellations and their movements as well as the pattern of the winds.
I know you are trying to play upon people's ignorance of the Bible ,but it is a weak case.Even the Great Pyramid of Giza (built by the family of Enoch) shows if you measure the base(each side curves inward like a slice of the earth, put them together and you get a globe)it is in Pyramid inches the exact measurement of the earth. The knowledge of a round (which is easy to see not only on the fazes of the moon but on a mountain top scanning the horizon)earth was indeed known .Just because some cult of the Catholic church disagreed ,didn't mean most societies hadn't known it.

A sphere contains an infinite number of circles and beyond that, why does a description based on visual evidence alone by ancient sheep herders negate facts.

Jesus was the name given to a baby born to a virgin named Mary. Jesus was a human being. He was the Son of Man. He overcame temptation. He equaled out what the first man Adam did. God himself could not do this in justice, only a man could. Jesus, as a human, reflected God perfectly. Prior to being a baby, and developing into a man, Jesus was something else in heaven. His name? We don't know. Was he Jehovah? Or possibly a part of Jehovah? Man doesn't see God, we can't comprehend the realities of the spiritual realm. So why pretend to know? Although, based on the Gospel, it does seem to make sense. But Jesus gave all honor to his Father, who gave him authority, wisdom, power. Clearly he was trying to teach us how to have a relationship with God - using a father/son analogy that we're accustomed to. Otherwise, had he exposed the reality to us - our minds could not have processed it. Was Jesus indirectly teaching his followers to pray to himself? Maybe - but I'll bet if he presented it like that, nobody would have listened. Jesus went back to his home in heaven. Does he still use the name Jesus up there? Is he now literally a part of the Father, in a way that no other spirit creature is? I have no idea, and who here really can say with authority? Jesus is my shepherd. What he taught as a man on earth guides me. He taught me to pray to the Father and worship him, so I do. Maybe they are now the same person, maybe they aren't. Why does that matter? Does God expect us to actually know this?

When someone has a vision but has no word for it, they try to describe it in the words of their time. For instance, if you had a vision of an airplane or a car before they were created, you would do the best you can to describe the vision with the knowledge of your time, because it has not been discovered, therefore it has yet to be revealed. A prophet must be very careful to describe in their present day words what they see,so the people are not misled. When the prophecy's occur, the people will make the connection. birds with eyes all around it= airplanes with windows that reflect as an eye would. It it is only when the progress of knowledge/technology occurs that you realize what they were trying to describe. Keep our minds open and be aware.

To be truly accurate it should not have been translated 'circle'. Isn't it actually kind of oblong?
