It's not just the wives of kings who were queens. The mothers of kings were usually queens, too.

The Queen of Heaven and all Creation was not invented by Catholics. She has appeared in most world religions and is an aspect of the Universal Great Mystery which is known as God. Jesus denied the title of King because that was not who he was, he was a prophet, a messiah and a Lord of Peace. He was not and never could be the only one. Whether his mother Mary was actually the Queen of Creation or not is a subject of debate and is somehow irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that the Virgin queen is real and manifests in many forms (not all of them virgin!). For more information on this subject, searching the history of the Black Madonnas is quite interesting.

The Gebirah, the Queen Mother, was more inportant in the Davidic Royal Family than the wives of the king.
If Jesus is King of Heaven Mary is Queen of Heaven.
If she is mother of the Royal Family of all those who are in Grace then she is Queen Mother of us all.

Mary is not the queen of Heaven. Here, read what the Bible says about the queen of Heaven.
Jeremiah 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

Some of Mary's honourary titles are:
Queen of Heaven, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Angels.
She was the human mother of Jesus.
G*D the Father was also his spiritual father.
The Holy Spirit overshadowed her at his conception.
We cannot apply merely human terminology to explain this.

You're right, Queens weren't just the wives of kings. Look at the Dowager Empresses of Japan...

In reality the catholic "Mary" is the "queen of heaven" in the Old Testament, and they make her cakes and anger the Lord:
Jer 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead [their] dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

The Queen Mary is an ocean liner. I've never heard a catholic refer to "Mary" as a queen.... occasionally however, I see on R&S someone asserting that Jesus was a homosexual.
