Fear of God, is not the same with frighten of Him. We fear Him as in we fear going against His Commandment, His Majesty, His Power. We fear that by doing wrong, we lose Him. and therefor, shut out from His Mercy. Not because He forsake us, we forsake ourselves. Because in forsaking ourselves, we shut out the light of guidance in conducting ourselves in the right way, the way He has shown us how to tread. Evil that exist in this world is just that, the absence of this light. The light that distinguish between Good and Evil. Without that light, without that Guidance, we are susceptible and easy prey to our true nemesis, The Devil. The Satan. Lucifer. Whatever his name is, he is the true forsaken, for he is the first to forsake God's love. And he wants take as many of us, the sons and daughters of Adam, down with him into hell. And if we let him, then and only then, we have something we can be truly be afraid of. God's Justice. Look through the ages and see the past history of a very cultivated people and advance technology of their time. Where are they now? That is God's Justice. Those people goes against God's Commandment and belittle His Message, those people He wipe out. That is what we must be afraid of. It can happen still in these days. He's still watching, and monitoring us. And He let us be until an appointed time. We will only know when it happens when He acts, not before hand. But before He did anything He will let us know what He wants to make clear. Such as a message like Jesus Christ brought before us, and another after him.
And if any here asking what is this light I'm talking, then the answer is religion. To tell us of His existence. Thats how He tells us to be careful of our action. To seek His mercy and guidance in our conduct. To give us the light to show us our way in distinguishing Good and Evil. Every action has a consequence. Those who do good, patiently presevering through thick and thin, and believe in Him... those He will reward richly. Those who forsake themselves, they got what they deserve, none can be blame but themselves for what is coming for them. God, in His numerous ways, send reminders to mankind of this message through out the ages through numerous channels. That is what Job the Baptist did, so does Zachary, Joseph, Noah, Father Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, Jones. And many others. They are the Messengers of God. They tought mankind the exact same message. God Exist, He is the One and Only. Just as Jesus Christ preach, and another after him. Every each one of them, tought as befitted the level of the people in their time.
And the message continues still unto this day...., heed His message of Mercy, seek His Love, He will care for you. Because He is The Most Loving, Most Caring, Most Benificient. You know them when you felt peace in your soul for thinking of Him and keeping Him in rememberance.
Abandon Him and follow the footsteps of Devil, and we will follow Devil into Hell. And then we will know what being afraid of God truly is. Death comes to us all, and what happens then is anyone guess. He told us that is the time when we return to Him, a step over from this world to the next, where we'll received Judgement as to what is our action is this life. Denying this or disbelieving it won't change a thing. Too many pious people and righteous men says the same thing throughout the history of mankind, and the clear evidence of His Majesty and Power in the Universe is a very hard to ignore. If He have the Power to create a thing as vast as the Universe out there and as complex as our own body, what's stoping Him in taking us back from the dead and be judged? Remember this, Except for the Creator, everything else have an appointed time alotted to them. Except for Him, The Eternal God, nothing in Creation will last forever. Not you not me, not even this world. Not even this universe. We are too small and weak to go against His Might in defying Him.

Because actually coming into contact is one of the most devastating, humbling experiences you will ever have. Before, all you had were stories, beliefs and then suddenly you are confronted with a reality that completely destroys everything you thought was real, up to that point. Just BLOWS IT AWAY!!! And yet you have to act and behave as if you don't notice anything different. But EVERYTHING is different. You know and God KNOWS you know it. That's the weird part. You cannot imagine how frightening this is, when you see how absolutely small, how absolutely NOTHING you really are. How helpless you are in the presence of God.

Because of the differences in God between the Old and New Testaments. In the New Testament God is loving and forgiving, but in the Old, God is wrathful and takes revenge. Remember how Saul was turned into salt just for turning around? If you attempt to deny the existence of the Old Testament God, you might be turned into salt also.

What an odd Question. I seem to have come in at the middle of a Conversation. Can we please start over from the Beginning so I can get all of God's Ducks in a Row before I make an Answer to this rather perplexing query.

I'm not frightened, but that's because I'm an Atheist and I don't believe in god. When I was a Christian, even though I was told he loved me, I was never quite sure. I mean...actions speak louder than words, right? Especially words that we can never hear. No offense to anyone, but the OT god was pretty vicious...I would think anyone who truly believed in him would be terrified of him. He reminds me of my ex-wife, only super-powerful and slightly less mercurial.

Because He is a jealous and vengeful God. Remember that part of the Bible?
Or are we talking about the cute and cuddly God 2.0 from the New Testament?
You let me know which one you worship and I'll give you a more complete answer.

It is very hard to be afraid of something thought up by scared little people thousands of years ago, friend.
I'm sure that your priest or your bible school teacher has told you that everyone who does not follow your 'christ' is affraid of it, but that is simply not true, please pass on my raised middle finger.
Also, I though you theists believed that your god was omnipotent and omnipresent, why to you put it in the masculine vernacular. Surely something that is virtually universal, i.e. universal, looses the enormity of it's power when you make it a human male in the stead of an androgenous all powerful thing...
