Sorry, the neoliberal and the Bolshevic pushing throughly discredited theories are wrong.

Imperailism has a specific meaning; the permanent annexation by a state of territory and its population in a remote part of the world by a state to form part of an empire.

The US at the turn of the 20th Century did acquire some Imperial possessions. As a consequence of the Spanish American War, the US gained Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico. Today only Puerto Rico is a part of the US, because they have not chosen independence,a quenstion that they vote on (along with Statehood) from time to time.

It was tried and found not to be a fit for our national character or ideology.

Neoliberals like to accuse the US of Imperiams from time to time. This actually is just what they call the use of the US military by a Republican administration.

And Bolshevism/Socialism/Communism has been thrroughly discredited and has never worked anywhere it was tried. The only two places that still beleive in are Havana, Cuba and Berkley, California. They cry "imperilialist" to distract from their own need to use totalitarian measures to retain the tenuous control they exercise.

Some people need to stop kidding themselves and learn what "Imperialism" means.

It was shortly after the Spanish-American War, the fought another war to consolidate their hold on the Philippines. They justified it by reasoning they were now one of the great world powers and had the authority to take colonies, better them than Spain and they could always euphemise it by not officially calling it a colony.

It hasn't.

To parphrase Colin Powell,

America has sent her Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines to many countries to ensure people are free, and in over 230 years, the only land America has ever asked for was enough to bury those who didn't make home.

Two obvious reasons:

1. Because we are resource hogs, we need to control other parts of the world to get their resources.

2. The national super ego.

To those who say we're not into imperialism, I offer a chortle and a heat-felt, "Get real, folks..."
