The theory is that the ingredient which gives tomatos their red color, lycopene, helps prevent cancer, but this has been called into question. The FDA's position is that there is no credible evidence that tomatos reduce cancer risk. There is "very limited" evidence that foods like pasta sauce can help prevent it, but there is still research going on and you shouldn't stop eating tomatos since they're still part of a healthy diet.

I don't believe it, either. There are far too many different kinds of cancer for tomatoes to be the one food that prevents them all. Tomatoes are good for you, though, and have benefits just as other fruits and vegetables do too.

In essence, certain foods like tomato, contain cancer-fighting properties. When you nourish your body with the right type of foods with certain healing abilities, then you are going to benefit from them. Just think about herbal medicine, etc.

Yes and no. Tomatoes do have anti-oxidant and flaviniods which REDUCE the risk of cell mutation, and thus LOWER the risk factors, but nothing can totally eliminate the risk of cancer.

There is a substance in real tomatoes..not in vitamins,or other products that claim it has it in it etc...that has been shown in some people who eat them regularly that it seems to prevent prostate cancer or has less occurence.

Yes actually, your mom is right! They contain certain properties (lycopene) that have been shown to prevent CERTAIN cancers. They are particularly good for men as they prevent prostate cancer. And yes, pizza counts;)
