Routine laboratory investigations usually require 1 ml to 1.5 ml of blood sample collected in microtainers. Blood cultures may requires at least 2 ml of blood. Initial laboratory investigations (includes many tests) may sometimes require up to 7.5 ml of blood.

It depends on what the blood is being tested for, and the size and health of the infant.

I used to draw blood to earn money while in medical school, and the NICU babies were the worst. We needed less than a cc, but their poor little scarred heels were reluctant to give it up.

A robust infant is capable of sparing more blood.

It depends on the test(s) that have been ordered. The more tests ordered the more blood is required.
