Mexican drug trafficking organizations are now the main supplier of illegal drugs in the United States. These DTOs are the leaders in nearly every form of illegal drug distribution. The biggest Mexican drug cartels continue to be run by 4 main families & are known as the Tijuana, Gulf and Juarez cartels & the Federation. When the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect with Mexico in 1994, it appears to have changed the face of the drug trade in both the United States & Mexico. As commercial truck, train, & ship traffic increased between the countries, the flow of drugs & money also increased along the 2,000-mile border. Mexican DTOs now bring in about 90% of the cocaine used in the United States, even though nearly all the coca continues to be grown in Columbia. In the year 2000, cocaine importation from Mexico was estimated at 500,000 pounds & by last year, it had grown to nearly one million pounds. Heroin made from poppies grown in Mexico is now the most widely distributed heroin in the UnitedStates with 20,000 pounds imported in 2000 rising to 60,000 pounds more recently. While only 5% is confiscated in its finished form. In 2005, about 27,000 acres of poppies were eradicated leaving an estimated 8,000 acres in cultivation. As precursor chemicals for methamphetamine became harder to get within the U.S., labs in Mexico began to supply a bigger & bigger percentage of the U.S. market. Mexican meth production has not been reliably estimated but 1,100 pounds were seized in 2000 & about 6,000 pounds were intercepted in both 2005 & 2006.

Yes, it is a good reason.....however, I think securing the borders against terrorists is an even better reason, and I am also mentioning the Northern border as well...

I am 53 years old. I was in the 7th grade when Richard Nixon began the war on drugs with "operation intercept."
The idea that borders can be sealed like tin cans is politically attractive, but physically impossible.
The US Mexican border will never be sealed. Just like the borders in Iraq will never be sealed.
The last I read the US Government is in the process of giving Blackwater some 15,000,000 dollars to fix our drug problem in Columbia.
Give it up baby. It ain't gonna happen. We could save the tax payers a lot of money by just disbanding the DEA.
A "War" will never be an effective strategy for dealing with drugs. As long as people want to buy them then they will be available. If people want treatment then provide it and if they want drugs let them have them.
Remember what killed the Soviet Union: Bankruptcy. The US will follow in their footsteps if we don't stop substituting fantasy for reality.
Drugs are like a water bed. If you push on Mexico then they start coming from Canada. Cut off Canada and the speed is manufactured in Kansass.
I've heard that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Why stop there, the world is full of violence by individuals, groups, gangs, celebrating mobs, armies and others I fail to mention on this list. Why the southern border, we don't have to go outside our country to find violence weren't McVeigh, Kaczynski and Rudolph United States citizens? Aren't groups such as Symbionese Liberation Army, Earth Liberation Front, Ku Klux Klan and the Black Liberation Army (1971 to 1981) all "Americanized" domestic terrorist? When speaking of Rudolph (Eric Robert Rudolph) I must mention his involvement with the Army of God. The Army of God is an anti- abortionist group claiming to have bombed abortion clinics and have members known to have shot clinic doctors. They carried out a anthrax scare to more than 200 clinics across the United States. Ask yourself are these actions something you as a person who dislikes abortion supporting of? Of course I will mention gangs such as Mexican Mafia, MS 13, Vice Lords, Latin Kings most of these foreign gangs are now chaptered within the United States. Most have a high percentage of members that are citizens. Again why just the southern border, why not seal off our independent states from our selves? I will not get into political groups or animal activists. We have police that are very very efficient in what they do, only in today's world that job is becoming more and more a job with military training, high training self defense and special weapons. There was a time in my youth I messed with most police officers here in Kenosha. Today I keep a distance not just for my own safety but in fear of what my mind may tell my body to do in order to stay alive, it's no longer a game. So you want to close the southern border, think that will keep you safe? Let's start from inside our own world, teach it right from wrong (if such a definition exists). Then if visitors/immigrants to the United States can not act as behaved as citizens then we can say we want to close our border to the rest of any given country that don't meet our standards.

No, closing the border seems drastic. You realize that means forbidden ANYONE to travel between the U.S. and Mexico, don't you?
A better way would be to impose more severe penalties for drug smugglers and dealers. Since illegal drugs being smuggled in from Mexico are such a problem, there should be special penalties for smuggling drugs from foreign countries that are extra severe. In Singapore, you usually get executed if you are caught with more than a few hundred grams of any illegal drug. Perhaps the U.S. should do that, too. And even more importantly, the U.S. should encourage Mexico to impose harsh penalties for durg manufacturers and dealers. Mexico should execute anyone who manufactures, deals, or trasnports illegal drugs. This may seem harsh but I personally support using the death penalty for more crimes than it is currently used for.

Not really. Drug trafficking is reason enough to end the failed 'War on Drugs,' which has turned out to be a giant anti-competition subsidy for, well, drug traffickers. Legalize, regulate, and tax such things, and Pharmacuetical and Tobacco companies will put the traffickers out of business in one quarter.
12 million illegal immigrants - 55% of them Mexican - is reason enough to secure the borders, ports, and international airports, thankyouverymuch.

by that logic the US would have to isolate itself and close all its borders, and never let anyone in.
when it comes to dealing with the drug industry, the problem is not so much the border being "open" as you say, but the fact that US citizens are the biggest consumers of said drugs.
its like trying to treat MRSA by merely covering the infected boil with a bandaid. unfortunatly for the US the infection is too wide spread, there is no coming back.

Yes.....you'd think. That could have been done ions ago and they didn't. Makes you wonder whether they really wanted to fix the problem or use it as an excuse.

YES ,IT SHOULD BE,BUT AS LONG OUR CITIZENS HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM.THEY CAN BE CONTROLLED VERY EASILY ,BY THE SOCIALIST SYSTEM,THAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE PAST 35 YEARS OR SO.IT GIVES THEM THE RIGHT TO GO AFTER OUR GUNS TAKE COUGH MEDICINE OF STORE SHELVES etc.IF THEY CAN KEEP ENOUGH PEOPLE DOPED UP,THAT MEANS THAT WE WILL NEED SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR THEM ,WHEN THEY ARE IN PRISON OR IN AN OUT PATIENT CLINIC.ONCE AGAIN ITS ALL ABOUT KEEPING MONEY IN OUR CORRUPT POLITICIANS HANDS.
