Quite the dilemma you have there - you want to be spiritual but only if you appear manly or macho at the same time! lol! If you can loose your hang-ups certainly yoga or Tai Chi have fitness as well as spiritual benefits.
Keep in mind that spirituality and character building are not the exclusive domain of "soft" martial arts. Find an instructor whose philosophy on training and/or life in general is as close to what you want as possible (don't look for the perfect match as you probably will never find that) and learn from him or her.
Good luck!

Shotokan Martial Arts is the best from if you are looking to stregthen mucles, determination, self diciplin, and self asteem. I took it for two years and I am really helthy now.
Tai Chi is good for all that but its more relaxed and breathing form. Tai Chi would be excellent if you are just starting in the martial arts. =]

I highly recommend Aikido/Aikibujutsu. This is an art I have been involved with for 2 years now and it has kept me in shape all on its own. At the same time, though, it takes the calm presence and peace of mind to carry out the motions invoved. It's practical and very useful for people of all age and sizes. The falls we take when thrown are great for conditioning and toning. I enjoy this art very much and I hope you look into it!

Krav Maga, Kickboxing/Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujutsu.
TKD, Taichi and the others are good, but these others will not help you on the street.
Fancy martial art will look extremely great a powerful, but in a fight don't look fancy but ugly !
But for you I think kungfu or taichi will do best.

There are quite a few Shaolin Monks that defected to the US and are teaching in many cities.
Search for one close to you. They usually incorporate spiritualism with their art, if you seek that, but they don't impose it on their students.

If you want to combine spirit and body, I'd go with Goju-ryu Karate, or one of it's sister styles, like Isshinryu, To'on-ryu or Uechi-ryu.
