i had just read and studied this, to me, i see that Jacob has begun his journey, he knows he is to be blessed and yet he has to go back and face his past, he is afraid, he prays, then he goes back to fear again, starts trying to do all kinds of things to manipulate the outcome, send giftsd to esau, move the wives and cattle around, etc. and then he finally wrestles itout in prayer and after being touched by God, he is changed forever, with the limp to remind him, i think Jacob grew spiritually through this chapter, Joy

Jacob had decieved his father a stole the bithright (inheretance) that was to go to his older brother.
Esau wanted to kill Jacob for this offence, so Jacob fled for many years.
As they say, time heals all wounds. In this case Jacob eventually came back to Palestine from Syria. Not alone and pennyless as he had left, but with 4 wives, 12 children, and flocks of sheepand goats...he was rich,
But he was afraid of Esau too, and wished to placate the hatred that had once exited, and thought might still be there.
The angel wrestled Jacob, losing to him and so blessing his.
This was to give Jacob :
1) the confidence to meet his older brother (who had long since forgave his twin in his heart and
2) Jacob was renamed by God as Israel, the name we have knkown his people for about the last 38 centuries or so.

Many people use the end of this chapter to illustrate wrestling with God in prayer. Another thing to note is that when Jacob was asked what his name was he told the truth as opposed to his earlier life when he lied to his father and claimed to be Esau. He was given the new name Israel and this can be seen as a picture of someone getting saved and being born again after they finally come to the end of them self and turn to God for a blessing because they realize that on their own they don't stand a chance of being saved. Jacob's name means "heel grabber" or "supplanter" or "deceiver". He confessed to God his true state and was given a new name and standing.

2 brothers..Jacob, Esau.
Jacob's names was changed to Isreal, and the start of the nation had begun...historical Isreals birth as a nation.
And Isreael means exactly to struggle with man, and God...they have been a struggling nation and still struggle.
They are Gods chosen, and the reason many a battle was taken by them, was God is purging the pagan lands for them to live.

Both were blessed with live stock etc...very rich.
Bedoins...meaning desert dwellers.
No hidden messase, no davinci code...simple easy and straight foreword.
All is Jewish history...and this book written by Moses.
Not all the bible is parable, much is history, the OT is the law, the NT is forgivness by God.

There is no underlying meaning. Its straight forward narration. Jacob cheated Esau in the past and fled before he could be caught. Jacob sends gifts ahead of him before he meets his brother in hopes he will forgive him.

which part ? first Jacob was afraid of his brother cause of taking his birth right from him....then if your talking about jacob wrestling with God....that was to say to HOLD ON to GOD and dont QUIT till YOU ARE BLESSED OF HIM...

In this hurry up fast paced world...people think God is a vending machine we put a prayer in on Sunday and get rich on Monday.......and that a Lie

One must first Believe He is and be willing to HOLD ON to God with all we got even wrestle or Reason together with Him so we By Him may get wisdom of His Word and for Him to Supply our need...and Bless us...
God isnt a God of a second thou can be...God wants us to SEEK / ASK/ KNOCK/ and be patient and continue...Till the answer comes...........thus prevailing BY FAITH....and HOLDING ON till HE MOVES in our life !!!!!

And there He even changed his name from Jacob to ISRAEL
( GODS CHOSEN )

In the beginning Man created God. And then he went forth and wrote a fairy story for the gullible.
