After that same person has given you praise for your work but because you are not bendding backwards and have to deal with best practice in the industry and third party vendors, calls you names behind your back. You hear about it. Give him a piece of your own mind and then are sacked??? The customer is US (well half Greek half French) and the boss is UK (provincial).

Well, Good For You!
Certainly, any job that involves customer contact means having to go that extra mile to be pleasant to people, even when they are unpleasant.
BUT, this is employment, not slavery! If that man really did cross a line into unacceptable behaviour, then your Boss should have been defending you from harrassment, not sacking you.
Now, come close, cos this is just for the two of us. When some low-life disrespects you, there are more ways of dealing with it than whoppin them with your tongue right there and then. Bide your time. Then put in a bad word about them at the right moment. Or shred the minutes of their next meeting. Or mail underwear to his address, with a note saying you found it back of your sofa. Be Creative, Girl - stalk that critter :)

Looking at the situation from the boss' point of view, he/she can't have the employees offending customers, no matter how unreasonable they are. Best wishes that you find a great job in the future.
