I'm going to be moving to California to go to school there in L.A. and I'll of course have a car. Do I have to change my drivers license so it reads California instead of Illinois (which is were I'm from)?

If you are going to be a resident of that state- yes.

You will need to take proof of your residency. You will also need to get the registration and tag changed to your new state.

If you are a college student and your primary residence is still your parents home out of state - then you are generally not required to change your license and plate.

To be sure - contact the dmv in your new state.

Since you are NOT actually taking up residencey in CA, you should be alright.

Most States require you to change your license upon becoming a resident after 30 days.

To be on the safe side, you might also notify your insurance agent in Illinois that you are living in California. I am sure that your insurance would be sufficient to cover you in CA since their minimum required limits of liability are some of the lowest in the States.

GOod luck in school and I hope this helps!
