For example ..film and stage performance. If we are supposed to be living in a tolerant society do we get offended at the way religion is portrayed. Example the passion of the christ directed by Mel gibson....
Or the way is Islam is being portrayed in some movies.

In a generally tolerant society, surely religious people should be behaving more tolerantly than say atheists because they have a benign god to advise them to 'turn the other cheek' etc.

Part of our learning process as individuals is to be able to express different ideas and see what other people think of them. Friends will soon let us know if our idea holds water for them and so people become wiser, not more foolish, by their expression of any sort of idea in this way.

Religious people do not trust anyone but their own god to censor ideas and their leaders are frightened of ordinary people expressing their own thoughts. Spokesmen for one religion against another become agressive in a sort of, "My big brother can beat up your big brother", way. In the worst cases, organised religion is really nothing more than a way for a country's establishment to keep control over 'The Great Unwashed', The 'Proletariat', or 'The Mindless Masses', call us what they will.

Religious people believe that they are the only good people on Earth because they are supporters of one particular faith - the 'true faith'.

For a safe and happy world, in which people are not afraid of ideas, give me atheists every time!

Some people do, but I think that they are basically very insecure and in denial about it.

However, I can understand who misrepresenting a religion can get up someone's nose, because I am a Pagan and don't appreciate my religion being called devil-worship - as a Pagan I don't believe in the devil. To me, it's the height of ignorance and inconsideration to project the negativity of one path onto another. As a human being, I happen to think that all paths are acceptable, as they all have good points to them. It's just that Paganism is the one that feels right for me, and I can't speak for anyone else.
