I know the recipe usually calls for a tart apple like Granny Smith but how will it come out if you use Red Delicious apples instead? I see you can use lemon juice or peel to make them tarter. Would orange juice do the same thing? Any advice would be helpful.

It is not just the tartness it is the consistency of the apples. Red Delicious are not as firm, higher water content, mushier when cooked so unless you want a mushy apple crisp then you should use the Granny Smith. The texture will be better. If you don't mind the texture then go ahead and use any apple, it'll taste fine, probably will be sweeter, and squishier.

Red Delicious apples will get really mushy in an apple crisp. Granny Smith apples are used in baking for their texture and tartness. They stay fairly firm when baked. You could try making an apple crisp with the Red Delicious apples but it will probably turn out soft and runny. I definitely would not use orange juice to make it tarter. It will sweeten it more and add more liquid which you don't need. If you can wait a day to get some different apples, I'd really recommend doing that.

Sure you can use Red Delicious if you want to. However, you may want either some Granny Smith or Winesaps or Yellow Delicious for texture--the Red Delicious will get very soft and lose their shape when cooked. The flavor is probably more important then anything, so, go with the ones you like. No need to try to "tart up" the apples--enjoy the flavor that the apples you have give to the Apple Crisp.

Food is about what you like not about what the recipe says.

Happy Cooking!

Substitute For Granny Smith Apples

Neither... Red Delicious don't stay crisp and crunchy... they get dry and soft. And Granny Smith might be a bit too tart for the sweet coating of a candy apple. I'd use Gala or Romeo apples... readily available at this time of year. Both of these apples are sweet and they are nicely crunchy. They'll hold up well with the coating.

Granny Smith apples are a more firm apple than the Red Delicious. The Red Delicious will give you a mushy crisp.

You can substitute another type of baking apple for Granny Smith, but any site you look at will say that Red Delicious apples are "unsuitable for baking". I've never tried, but it will probably be mushy, mealy, and not a great flavor.

if you don't like granny smiths, try a different kind of apple, like a gala or braeburn... they are a bit harder, the same type of consistency as a granny smith, but much sweeter and more palatable flavor. Don't use a red delicious for baking or cooking becuase like the first person said it will 'melt' when it's cooked. my suggestion? Try Honeycrisp's... they're the best apples... and completely seasonal. fall time only. Perfect for holiday cooking. :)

apples, wine, cheese and olive oil all have one thing in common,,, don't cook with it unless you love eating it by itself.

I use whatever apples are in season or on sale. The red delicious will give you a different texture and flavor, but it's good, too.

Experiment and try different ones. Don't be so caught up in the recipie. Sometimes you'll come out with a bad batch, but often you'll discover something wonderful. Remember the red delicious tend to be dryer.

But don't be afraid to experiment. I discovered this week end that Goldfish and Raisinettes taste pretty good together. You just never know!
