Mange requires medication. I suggest they take it to the vet and get it treated with the proper meds.

Well, first it needs to be determined if the dogs actually have mange and what kind. If they have Sarcoptic mange, Revolution applied every 2 weeks for 3 treatments will treat it and then applying it monthly will prevent them from getting it. The dog needs to be heartworm tested first to make sure it doesn't have heartworms because Revolution also has a heartworm preventative in it.
It's doubt-full that a vet will give you this without seeing the dogs as it is a prescription medication and federal indicates that a vet/client/patient relationship must exist in order to prescribe medications.
It could also be caused by fleas as well, especially if the dogs have a flea allergy. In this case Frontline, Advantage, Advantix or Revolution would help.

Okay, if you are unable to get to a vet you might try this remedy (it's messy and nasty but it works) - you will need to go to the store and get some sulfur and you will need to get a gallon jug of cooking oil - mix the sulfur with the cooking oil ans slather it on the enire dog from nose to tail - you have to cover the dog completely. This should be done twice - the dogs will get nasty and after two days you bathe them with a good medicated shampoo and repeat the process. The problem with mange is you don't know what kind of mange it is (if it really is mange but it probably is) and some mange will cross species to humans so you will need to be extremely careful in dealing with this. Veterinarians are your best and there are vets in Mexico the question is do you want to make the investment to pay for a vet call. Also, why are your father-in-laws dogs running loose? If you care about the dogs then they would be protected from the dogs that are running loose and not allowed to run freely.

Mange is a mite infestation, and if your parents dog shows signs - constant scratching, biting itself, dry flaky skin, and sores from scratching, treat the dog with insecticidal soap, and all the bedding and stuff that the dog comes in contact with. Some of the tablets that treat parasites in the dogs will cover the mange ones too.
And try to restrict the amount of contact with the feral animals too.

There are different kinds of mange, caused by different kinds of mites, that require different treatments. They could have sarcoptic mange (dog has very itchy flaky, scabby skin) red mange (doesn't itch like sarcoptic mange, dog has scaly, greasy skin or has patches of thickened, wrinkled, inflamed skin) or dandruff (usually on the back of the neck) caused by mites. I would suggest that you treat the dogs and their environment. Some types of mange can be transmitted to humans (scabies) so be on the lookout for little red, itchy bumps on your skin.
My grandma used to use Sardex on her dogs. I'm not familiar with the safety of this product or with its efficacy so I would do a little research before using it. This product can be bought over the counter...check your local feed store. Good luck!

Mange is caused by tiny little mites that are eating your dog's skin. All dogs have mange but their immune system keeps it in check so it doesn't manifest itself. Changes in diet or an illness that depletes a dog's immune system can cause an onset. The little mites could get into clothing and bedding, carpets and things like that. You don't want them. Improve your dog's diet and see a vet about something that will kill the little mites.

I found a dog that had mange and the vet gave her a shot the first time I had her in for a check-up and then I had to take her back in about a week to get her a follow-up shot. It clears it up; this took place a few years back and she has had no reoccurance and is in good health.

the problem is that even though you do something for the strays...it would be temporary...since the dogs will continue to live the life they live now...they are not living the life of our pets here in America...
as for your family dogs...the mange is really a mite...and they probably are all over the property...so you would need something like sebin from the nursery to treat the soil around the property...but im not sure if it will work...its like if you neighbor had bad roaches...you would need something to prevent them from crossing over the property lines to your house...and unless you use something to prevent them from coming for a visit you would be wasting your time...yes? epsom salts would work for the roaches...baking powder works for ants...and you need to know if there is something for the mites...to kill them first and then put around the property border if the yard is fenced to keep the dogs in and the mites out...good luck...and the vet would give a wash and a medication to be taken orally...so good luck

Go to the vet and get treatment. If it is mange, it is sarcoptic, since it is spreading easily. The "home remedies" of putting used motor oil on the dog are VERY TOXIC and can kill the dogs.
You need to see a vet.
There ARE vets in Mexico.
Yeah, used oil is harmless. That is why they do not let you just put it down drains, or let it run down your driveway. HOW is used motor oil HARMLESS???????????? Would you eat it?? Because that is exactly what dogs do when it is all over them. It is actually CRUELTY in many states to put it on the dog. It is in NY.
