Yes they can IF they have stereo audio output connectors (usually color coded red and white RCA jacks). You connect the output connection of your DVD player to the line inputs of your stereo receiver.

Yes. Depending on how old a DVD player and how old the receiver is, this can definitely be done. To have the best possible sound, you can use an optical cable, coax cable, or HDMI. This will give you the truest surround sound quality. How you can do this is by hooking up any of those three cable to the output of the DVD player to the input of the receiver. That's basically it. You have to program your receiver to recognize the input and set up the output on the DVD player. Newer and more expensive models do this for you. The most important thing to have for the best possible sound is your speakers.

You can do it one of 2 ways:
1) use a phono to phono cable (red and white) from the back of your dvd player to an input on your stereo,
OR
2) Use a 3.5mm stereo jack to phono cable, the jack going from the headphone socket of your tv to your stereo.
