If measured with a dial indicator, how much sideplay in the primary throttle shaft is too much for this style of carb? Obviously, if it leaks air - that is too much. But I'm rebuilding it, and there is a small amount present, probably about .001-.002" It is barely audible when the shaft is rocked side to side.

Rochester carbs are notorious for having looseness in the throttle plate shafts. I've never seen one that ever caused a problem. There always will be some as otherwise it would be siezed. Keep going and you'll be okay.

Fom, I 've been thumbing thru a 1973 Motors. man. and can't find anything on primary throttle shaft play. That little amout of play, I wouldn't worry about
