I know global warming is a serious problem at the moment that is likely to get a lot worse as time goes on but is this where the real threat lies to the planet and man’s future?

Personally I believe that atheism poses an even bigger threat to the long term survival of mankind. Do you agree? I mean just take a look all around you and think about what’s really going on. The planet at the moment is full of immorality, people who lie, cheat, murder, and steal etc who seem to have turned their backs completely on God.

Geez, global warming is causing major changes in climate patterns. When this happens, crops are affected, less food is produced, and people starve. When this happens, migration and wars will happen because there's a shortage of food.

As for atheism, how can they bring about the end of the world? Yes, lying and murders and stealing is committed by people, but who said it's just atheists? If you look at how these people were brought up, they tend to grow up in Christian families. A lot of immoral activities occur in the US each day, and a lot of these are committed by so called Christians.

And regarding the end of world, I think religion could have a greater possibility of destroying it before global warming. If you know your history, a lot of wars have been caused by religious differences, and tend to end with many deaths, even of atheists. Such differences are dangerous!

The Earth has been much warmer than it is now. During the age of the dinosaurs, vegetation was in abundance due to very warm climates. This is why the dinosaurs were so big; they had plenty of food. Humans could benefit from warming climates too. The problem is that we're making it hard to adjust to rapid environmental changes because we have developed rigid physical (infrastructure -- buildings, etc.) and political societies that function well mostly in only the environments for which they were built. It's very costly to tear down buildings and build new ones when water levels rise and fall and good farming land is destroyed. And changes in where crops can be grown efficiently and where the best water supplies are can cause massive wars. The problem with global warming theories is that humans think that we're in the perfect climate now. Well, actually humans have benefited over the last thousands of years as the Earth has warmed. Whether we'll benefit even more from further climate warming periods is not really known. I tend to think that man-made global warming is kind of a hoax. And even if it's true, I don't think we will make a big enough impact to destroy ourselves. And NO, we cannot destroy the Earth. But the Earth will be destroyed by global warming when the Sun dies out and it grows very large towards the end of its life.

You know, years ago I learnt that

a Pessimist was an optimist who had become a realist

An atheist was a believer who became a rationalist

Now I believe that it is also true to say

Religion has become the retreat of the gormless, witless and gutless and a way to turn the tide against any form of advancement ..

the modern, and good, word for these people is "Luddites"

as to turning from God, which God? and why should your God be punishing you (to paraphrase yourself) if I've done something wrong .. and if I should feel guilty .. hell No! I don't.. why? Youngsters of today have all the time in the world to educate people in environmental issues without preaching their religious philosophies, time to enjoy the electronic media and games, time to enjoy holidays and healthy life styles and look forward to a secure future.. WHY? because my generation invented, made, set up and fought and died for the right for people to protest about what we did .. so before you start pointing accusative fingers at others, look to yourself, your attitude and the people that you, or your family, had a share in voting into power

Hitler wasn't an Atheist. Neither was Saddam or any of the terrorist involved in 9-11. It takes a person of faith to strap a bomb to their chest. Or to commit genocide. The Christians said killing the people already living on this continent was justifiable because they weren't converting fast enough. The only person in the history of the world to order use of nuclear weapons in a war was a devout believer; Harry Truman. Why would an Atheist, who believes this is the only world there is, destroy the planet? We don't think there's anywhere else to go. Certain religious groups, on the other hand, look forward to the death of this planet. Some even call it the "Rapture."
Besides, when have atheist been in a position of enough power to do anything? Religious leaders and religious people run this world and if they run it right into the ground it won't be the Atheist's fault. You jerk.

Atheism is helping us save the planet.

For us to be able to continue to live on this planet we need to have reality based government and any government that bases anything on religion is not in any way reality based.

"The planet at the moment is full of immorality, people who lie, cheat, murder, and steal etc who seem to have turned their backs completely on God."
Actually it's the people who have imaginary friends who tell them their 'morality' that are causing most of the problems we have including terrorism (and you do realise that divorce rates among fundamentalist Christians are higher than among atheists?).

Show me an atheist suicide bomber and maybe I can take your ramblings seriously.

As for global warming, I don't think it'll do us in though it will cause us quite a bit of trouble.

Global warming has a far better chance than anything Atheists might do.

You do realize, of course, that the vast majority of the US considers themselves to be Christian yet the vast majority whines about how the country is going to hell. Could it be those 85% Christians who are doing the majority of the lying, cheating, murdering, stealing, etc?

Looking at the news i see plenty of murders, liars and cheats that claim to be 'christians'. However, i know of very few true atheists that are cheaters, murders or thief's. The non belief in a 'god' does not necessarily mean that one is a criminal...in fact, most likely an atheist is going to be honest, logical and nature promoting.

There are less atheists in prison then in the general population as a percent. So really, those who are lying, cheating, murdering, and stealing are theists. Sorry to burst your hypothesis. So i would have to go with Global Warming.

Ok, at best only 10% of the world are considered atheist. Do you actually believe that all of the bad stuff going on out there is done solely by atheists? Have you ever met atheists and talked to them in a friendly talk that does not involve religion? You would see that they are regular people and not mindless psychos. There are more christians committing crime out there today than there are atheists committing crime.

Do some research and you will find that there is no correlation between morality and belief in a god.

Yo Wired. Give some reference to all of these atheists converting on death row. I have never heard of an atheist on death row myself or an atheist converting on death row.

I think wars between opposing religions are going to eventually destroy this planet. They have an impressive centuries old track record for death and destruction that continues to this day.
