The dragon is obviously Satan, and the Woman that is refered here (also called the Bride) symbolizes true christians who keep the commandments of God. Don't get me wrong, I believe Mary was a wonderful woman, and she has a venerated place next to Jesus, but that is where here role ends (in my opinion). Check out Rev 22:8,9. John goes to bow before the angel that was showing him the prophecies, but the angel stopped him. Now if an angel, and he must have been an important one, refuses worship and actually says 'Be Careful!', how much more would Mary?

You would have to understand what the woman and the dragon really represent. Here's the commentary from a book I read on the verse, but it won't make much sense without reading the rest:
17 And because the earth helped the woman, the dragon was wroth with her, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed who were not drowned in the flood and who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
People feel the effects of their own doings, and cannot find a solution to their problems, because their flesh (“the dragon”) keeps them from realizing that the answers to all their problems are in the words of Christ and his simple mandate of “doing unto others.”
Their inability to realize this frustrates them, and they blame anyone but themselves for their predicament. Therefore, it is natural for them to place the blame on those who are not involved in worldly pursuits. These worldly pursuits have become their motivation, and are the essence of their existence, and the true cause of all their problems.
The “war” between “the dragon” and those who are saved (“the remnant of her seed”) from the “great flood,” is continual, and will one day culminate in a final battle John will later present as “Armageddon.”
The book is free at the site below if you are interested:

Debra, I taught Bible studies, in Sacred Heart Church, for eight years. After much study and looking further into this matter, the woman is Israel...a Nation. The Dragon is satan who uses the Anti-christ.
I am well aware that many see this as Mary; however, when you take these scriptures and put them back into text....it is clear that the woman is not Mary; but rather, a nation.

The woman is divine Love's idea, pure, tender, holy, perfect, obedient, and so on. All of her thoughts can never be touched by this dragon (evil), but evil "thinks" it has a short time left for the deception of mankind , and so descends upon all human thought in an attempt to devour spiritual perfection (God's man, her seed). The dragon's "time" is running out right now.

The pure woman represents the people of all ages who are written in the Book of Life; They are citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem, God's kingdom. Revelation 21:2 portrays this woman of Zion the Heavenly Jerusalem prepared as a Bride adorned for her Husband.
"Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name."-- Rev 3:11-12
"And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the BRIDE, THE LAMB's WIFE ....And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: .... And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass..... Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." -- Rev 21:9,12, 21; 22:14 (Emphasis, caps mine)
Christ is the Husband who in the end takes God's People (the Church), as His Bride. The dragon king of Babylon is the devil. Through all the ages past the devil had sought to destroy the Woman (God's people) by corrupting His truth thus misleading her away from her true Husband, Christ, and luring her unto himself.
God Bless You always Debra!

The woman is Eve (the woman clothed with the sun).
Eve is the mother of all God the Father's children. Adam is the father of all the red dragon's children.

SATAN HAS HIS WOMAN AND THE LAMB HAS HIS BRIDE
Gal. 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Rev.3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
Rev.21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Rev.17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
